I'm not finding that to be the case. One of the most vocal opponents of it that I know is a conservative teabagger. All the liberals I know are also against it. The only person I know who favors it is a moderate who I suspect voted Obama but didn't like it.

it's a very, VERY local issue, so i highly doubt it is partisan

I'm against it and have three in the Government schools which I am heavily personally invested in Improving. I think the negative unintended consequences are numerous. I may be wrong.

While it is a collection of predominately white neighborhoods, I have found the support to be pretty strong from everyone in the area. The opposition is mostly coming from the Baton Rouge side who will be losing the huge tax base. I don't really know how support stacks up republican vs democrat, but it is pretty strong in both white and black.
If it succeeds, it WILL hurt Baton Rouge residents, but it WILL benefit St George residents. This is a large unincorporated area wanting to create their own community. I fully support them exercising their democratic rights to do so. Two of the top three school districts in Louisiana (Zachary and Central) split off from Baton Rouge and this community is hoping to do the same.

I am for it primarily because of the people against. The unions and the young professionals in this town that support such idiotic causes as the BR Wall project (i.e., the Cocktail Circuit) are against it. I figure whatever they see as bad is likely very good for me. I am a Libertarian for what it's worth. Most of the people I have talked to about it, all republicans or libertarians since I purposefully have no liberal friends, support it. My dad is a staunch conservative and against it, however, because he fears what it will do to Baton Rouge.

Very local.
Old money/old politics vs. new/new

Amongst my family & friends in the area (I don't live there obviously), St. George is definitely a Tea Party cause célèbre. In fact, if I were Rob Maness, I would try to use St. George as a wedge issue to syphon tea party support away from Bill Cassidy (this assumes, of course, you don't think Landreiu can get to the magic number in the Jungle Primary). While it certainly isn't a national or statewide issue, It is fair game with Cassidy since he represents Baton Rouge. Forcing Cassidy to take a public position on the issue (I'm assuming he hasn't already but I'm too lazy to check) could be a boon to Maness or another insurgent-challenger.

Not in terms of political ideology, but the split seems pretty clean between people who would be in St. George wanting to be done with the dying husk of corruption and bullshite that is Baton Rouge and the money-grubbing race-baiting leeches in Baton Rouge wanting to drag good people down with them.
EDIT: Before this post turns the thread into a shitfest, I'm talking about people I know IRL. This very thread has level-headed answers opposing the split that in no way match the character of the ne'er-do-wells I'm describing.

In today's Advocate there is a lengthly article about a proposal to lock in all sales taxes for the city of BR even if St George incorporates. Yes parish sales taxes would remain in the general fund even if St George incorporates. Fair?
Obviously the city will do anything to keep the status quo even though it is obvious that the entire parish is funding city police and city fire even though they do not serve the parish.
The obvious solution would be to have city police serve the parish and for city fire to serve the parish. They can't do this for dome reason, Why?
The same people whontell you we must have one school system tells you we need multiple police and tire groups. Why?

To answer the OP....It's a local issue. It's not a partisan issue.

quote:It is literally being reported among liberal circles "Evil racist white separatists start new city to get away from black people."
All the liberals I know are also against it.
Can't imagine what would make the easily led liberals oppose the thing, with reporting like that.

Those I know that live in Baton Rouge, are against it. Those I know that live in St. George are for it. Both have good arguments. I live in Baton Rouge, but am registered to vote in Ascension Parish and I am pro St. George. However, I have serious reservations about the people behind much of the initiative and the proposed budget.

for the St George advocates...
Let's suppose St. George achieves the set goal of quality schools.
How will that stop the Baton Rouge residents from wanting to relocate to St. George in order to send their kids to better schools? How will that stop developers from catering to that market through section 8, or tax credit? Now, let's suppose they do, and the only thing left for Baton Rouge is LSU and one enormous ghetto which infrastructure still has to be maintained while it continually slides down the proverbial shitter because there is no money to fund it because there is so little revenue coming from the few left. What do you suppose will soon become of St. George long term? Hell, short term for that matter?
