That sounds ridiculous.
Here's a novel idea:
Draft order is determined by record (worst to first) like every other freaking league known to man.

Interesting. Not sure teams would go for that though, since it takes the whole lottery thing out of play (which I feel like they drum up interest with that, and also makes for awesome conspiracy theories).
Something like this would help with trades though, since you would automatically know what picks you're trading for (as opposed to conditional ones).

I wish they would just cut the season in half. Problem solved and no complicated draft format needed.

Obviously the main objective with this format would be to eliminate tanking. I'm not as opposed to drastic change as most are, especially in basketball.

You sound adventurous.

Stan Van Gundy's been talking about this for quite a while.
I'm not opposed to it, I like it.

Certainly gives the underclassman #1 pick some sort of option of who he would play for

I like it.
Anything to eliminate the tanking mentality.
That's a great point. Imagine if the Raptors have the #1 pick your freshman year, but the Lakers have it the next year. What to do?

Haha. Yeah I know. I just hate the whole lottery thing. I mean when you really suck as a team, it really sucks worse when you get hosed and end up with a lower pick then you should have.
I get that it's in place to prevent tanking, but every other league uses team records to set draft order and there really aren't many tanking concerns.

Of course. And I'd be all about it if it would stop tanking, because that's bullshite for a team to do (I understand it strategically, but it completely fricks the paying fans).

The owners won't go for it IMO.

This may be a dumb question but I don't follow the NBA. Why don't they have a system like the NFL where it's merit based?

I dont think they will either.

i agree with this
i think this concept with "pods" could be more feasible. split the league into 6 pods of 5 teams
split the draft into 6 pods. you know until infinity what pod-slot you will be in.
within each pod, the worst record gets the best pick and the best record gets the worst pick

That's true too...would definitely affect decisions to come out of/stay in college for high-profile players.
"Oh, I'm the best player and Milwaukee is the #1 pick this year, but the Lakers are the #1 pick next year? Cool..I'll stick it out another year."

I think it would just increase the gap between the haves and the have nots in the NBA. Like you said, players will wait a year to go to the team they want.

Perhaps, but the bottom line is still that your draft number is based on on-field performance. That's still merit based right?

Merit based would be the Super Bowl champs getting the #1 pick, based on merit.
It's the anti-merit, has a nice ring to it!!!
