Being a Christian and being a legalistic religious zealot is different. The latter is who is annoying. I'm a Christian and they annoy me.

And nobody is making anybody watch them. But 11 million other people find them very entertaining. I don't always watch their show but I find it entertaining and a breath of fresh air to see a show set in the South where they have good family values and end each show with a good message.

I am not talking about the Robertsons. I am talking about religious people who make Christians look bad.

I thought is was over even before the A&E issue with Phil, this past season was really forced more than others and the crap about A&E putting bleeps when they shouldn't have. Just lost interest.

Wow what?

Suggesting that a man ought to be applauded for standing up for his beliefs REGARDLESS of said beliefs is an idiotic suggestion. This was pointed out by the suggestion that Hitler, too, stood up for his beliefs.

Funny thing...the only time this suggestion is ever made is when the person suggesting it either openly agrees with, or secretly agrees with but is afraid to say so, the embattled person "standing up for their beliefs." See recently: Dean, Paula.

If a person stands up for hateful, stupid, ignorant, uninformed, etc(in general not specific to this guy) beliefs why should that person be applauded? They should be protected from the government stopping them from having them, but why applauded by the general public?

Not what he did. He did not compare this guy's views to Nazis. He simply used Hitler as an example of someone I'd like to think we ALL agree had shitty views and opinions and stood up for them...and we seem content with not suggesting we applaud him for having done so.

It was an extreme example but a solid one given the nearly 100% rejection rate of the guy's views.

Where did he cast a stone?

What exactly does it mean to cast a stone to you?

You must think the gays and those protesting are casting stones at Phile? Where is the outrage for their stone casting?

"given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis."

That is the definition of Godwin's law.

A couple episodes without Phil won't kill the show.

Probably not, but Willie and the boys should pull the show in support of their father and probably their similar beliefs as well.

DD is all that A&E really has.
I've seen them all several times.
But won't watch A&E again.
Don't care about what people choose to do but I do care about our right as Americans to believe what we want to believe and exppress it when we are asked about it. See ya A&E. JMO

What did a&e expect from a preacher? They can't be surprised.

He thinks they are going to hell, probably thinks those who sleep with each other before marriage are going to hell too. So what?

He did not compare him to Hitler in the sense that Goodwin clearly means. He was not equating their opinions in ANY way, nor trying to tar the DD guy as being a Nazi. He simply used the worst possible example of someone we would likely all agree had horrible views and ask if he too should be applauded for expressing them. Call it a semantic argument on my part, but I think I'm correct.

It was a valid question, whether or not you appreciate him using Ole Adolph.

Would you prefer Louis Farakhan? Maybe Jim Jones? The point would still stand.

The point was that there are tons of examples of people with horrendous views...do we applaud ALL of them for having the courage of their convictions in stating them in public, or do we simply, in America, try our best to protect their right to hold them and reserve the right to condemn what they say based on its content?

It is my opinion that the majority of people are in no way interested in applauding ALL people for having the courage to state their opinions, and that suggesting is only trotted out when someone agrees with the person under fire. Today the example is the DD guy being blindly supported by the religious/right. Tomorrow the same folks will be calling out someone making asinine comments with a left leaning tilt and the left will suggest that we applaud the courage of their convictions. The exact same argument will be used, and neither side will see the irony.

I am so glad that A&E supports tolerance of ALL opinions. What a joke and if this true, the cast should give a big finger to the network. First they could not pray, now this bs?

The next 1/2 season is debuting Jan 15 and is already shot

They are in hiatus right now so what is he suspended from?

Phil was barely in the series this season anyway. the show is about Si, Jase and Willie

On the Barbra walters special last night they said the family is worth $80 million now

It's gonna be interesting to see how his family responds to AE. I promise Kay and Si will not be back until Phil returns...I've known the man for years and he doesn't have a hateful bone in his body...40 years ago he was a hell raiser he has since found God and turned his life around ..he has never hidden anything about his past

I think this issue is ultimately a mirror image of the chic fil a controversy. In that the politically correct view of the LGBT community isn't the mainstream view.

Well, wonder what the Arseholes & Elitists network will do now?
