re: College Football needs to make defensive pass interference a spot foul

No one has convinced me that the college game is better because it is only a 15 yard foul.
I think the lack of spot foul helps encourage the diversity of the collegiate game. The reward/risk ratio for spot fouls tilts heavily in favor of wide open, down the field passing attacks; keeping it a set yardage eliminates some of the potential reward for bombing away, thus helping to keep things like option offenses viable, and helping the college game get away from the cookie cutter offensive tendencies of the NFL.

Never thought of it that way, and I completely agree. Excellent point.

I think they should do this. I know some people say they like that it's only 15 yards and that it is more fair, but it is not and it encourages defenses to commit pass interference.
That's true...but that must be balanced with the idea of giving generally mediocre (to be kind) officials more power to change a game. I lean to the pros changing to the college rule more than the colleges changing to the pro rule.

I've actually numerous times said the NFL absolutely needs to revert to college football's rule on PI.
Spot fouls are absolutely ridiculous with how awful refs are. I don't want them to have that much power.
I error on the side of 15 yards because:
1. 15 yards is still a very substantial distance in football
2. Deep passes, even when not interfered with, are extremely difficult to complete. A pass needs to be borderline perfect and then you still have the catch

Pro foul is fine since they are pros .... You can't assume college players will make those catches

If you keep it at 15, somebody is going to get screwed by it.

If you let the officials decide each call on the basis of intent or egregiousness, then that's a can of really yucky worms.
Agreed. I've gone back and forth on this one myself, but I like the way it is currently. A guy getting blatantly interfered with on a 50 yard bomb that likely would have been caught would certainly seem to warrant more than a 15 yard penalty. But this is offset by it being a 15 yard penalty for passes under 15 yards. And also by how much more it sucks to give a team 50 yards on a call that refs will often get wrong (just because it's an inherently difficult call to make).

No way it should be a spot foul. There is no guarantee the receiver would catch the ball without the interference. WRs miss easy throws all the time. Half the distance to the spot. Both sides get screwed equally.

I think if you make it a 15 yd penalty it should always be so. Even on a 1 yd crossing pattern. That way both teams can benefit from the difference.

Well said. I am very much of the opinion that spot fouls are not needed and that 15 yard penalties are the way to go.
Why does defensive pass interference warrant a spot foul but offensive pass interference 10 yards?

I'd rather it be a standard 15 and have a guy intentionally commit PI than a situation where a QB heaves up a 60 yard prayer and players feet get tangled or the refs make a bad call and all the sudden the ball is at the 1.

The NFL spot foul PI penalty is just about the worst rule in all of sports
agreed... it's so subjective... often times QBs are rewarded for horrible underthrown passes where DBs have good coverage.

If you want to middle ground it just change the penalty yardage to 20 or 25 yards. Everything under that would be a spot foul like it is today.

The worst rule in all of sports is the "you fumbled out the endzone therefore touchback for the other team" rule.
The spot foul for PI in the NFL is bad, but it's no where near close to being severely punished simply because you fumbled in the wrong spot and the other team did nothing to earn it.

yeah losing possession because you fumbled out of bounds in the end zone is terrible it should be a touch back and you retain possession at the 20 yard line.

Why? They already score enough points. It's not like offenses are struggling and need the extra penalty yardage.

Because most every rule implemented in recent history has been designed to give the offense an advantage.
Spot fouls on pass interference are awful.

We have all seen games where the defense blatantly commits the foul and holds the receiver because it means the lesser of two evils.
How often does this really happen. I don't think it's all that prevalent. The problem with a spot foul is that it assumes the catch would be made, and I don't believe that's a safe assumption.

Something like a spot foul if the player had an uninhibited path to the end zone and is at a point nearer the goal-line than the defender who committed the penalty.
Otherwise 15 yards.
I like that. Maybe take it a step further and award a TD if it happens in the endzone...
