Desoto Parish - Clear Lake vegetation problem

I asked about Clear Lake (I-49/Hwy 509) duck hunting/fishing opportunities on the OB a few months ago. Got report from a few of you from NWLA of no fish, and quite a few hunters during duck season.
I was going to keep my eye on it just as a backup spot......not anymore. Pulled these from a duck hunting forum.

Looks like you could pull up at any moment and see a number of deer out there grazing.
Clear Lake is not so clear anymore...

That would make a nice baseball complex.

Solid salvania.
The devil created this shiz. That place is toast. IT would cost a bazillion dollars to rid that place of that evil weed.

Actually, LSU has found some type of organism that eats it. I was talking to a guy who's brother-in-law works with it.
He says that they have successfully removed Salvania from a few small ponds and such.
They have the organisms/bugs in a bucket filled with Salvania, which the bugs and their larva live in. they take those buckets to the ponds and after a few short weeks it is eaten and gone.
This bug eats the root systems, which kills the plant permanently and is why it has worked so well.
No, I don't know what's it call but supposedly you can buy it from LSU or the LA Dept. of Ag.

Is that the beetles? I thought I saw mention that the beetles did not produce the desired results on large bodies of water...

We had salvinia in our 7-8 acre pond. LSU attempted the beetles but was unsuccessful due below freezing temperatures can pretty much wipeout the beetles.
We had to break a levee at the rear of the property, drain the pond, spray weed killer several times and then re fill the pond. We are still fighting small patches that pop up from time to time, but the pond looks better than ever. I would not wish that shite on my worst enemy tho, pain in the arse.

Wick it may be, I'm not 100% sure.
From what the neighbor told me, it has been kicking arse.
He didn't mention that. Sounds about right though

Yeah I would think conditions would have to close to perfect to get the desired result, which is it being totally removed.

The problem I have seen brought up a lot in discussing the beetles is what are they going to eat when all the salvinia is gone?

It's been a while since I've been over there. That's sad that it looks like that now.

I used to pirouge all over that lake. I wonder what it looks like down by the spill way? You have to go west at the exit and head up some little pig trail of a road to get there.

holy salvinia, that stuff doesn't seem to be as big of a problem down here as it was a few years ago...i remember toledo having a problem with it also but didnt see any last year.
this is the crap that pisses me off till no end now

Black Bayou Hosston, one of the best big fish lakes in the state, isn't far behind. I was out there several weeks ago and there is about 75% coverage.

Caddo, Bistaneau, Wallace, Cross and practically every other shallow cypress lake in the area have this stuff trying to take over sizable chunks of the lakes. Not sure if the beetle program Texas is running on Caddo has seen results. They were trying to make the beetles become more tolerant of cold. Apparently it had worked well in south Texas but the weather is obviously milder down there.
