Many Cubs fans, including myself, thought the Astros were going to pass on Mark Appel and he'd fall to the Cubs at #2 this year. The opposite happened, and the Cubs selected Bryant to mild surprise.

So far, all he's done is rake. .344 .391 .688 1.078 with 7 HR, 23 RBI, 10 2B 1 3B and 9/27 BB/K in his first 27 professional games.

In his first game at Low A Boise, he struck out 5 times. After that, he demolished the pitching in that league and hasn't looked back. Now at the Cubs A team in Daytona, he's hit .360 .385 .760 1.145 with 3 HR and 5 RBI and 1 2B with a 1/9 BB/K in 7 games. The K's are there, which we expected, but there are some walks and that's a great sign.

This is a small sample size, sure, but it's really a great sign for a high prospect to enter his professional career like this. He should open next spring at AA Tennessee, leapfrog Mike Olt at AAA and join the Cubs some time in 2014. That's shooting high, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Side note: second rounder Rob Zastryzny is also pretty good, opening his career with a 2.21 ERA and 1.279 WHIP in his first 20 1/3 professional innings.

This sunshine pump thread is brought to you by this cute bear cub.

he's come a long way from that 5 K night to start his professional career.

I never read anything about his defense (probably because chicks dig the long ball). Wondering if anyone has anything credible about if he's going to be able to stick at 3rd.

I'm going to check out fangraphs...

ETA: Nothing on fangraphs after a quick search. BR has him at 5 errors in 67 chances. We'll see. Don't care, dude is hitting.

Let's just hope he avoids this list:

1. Corey Patterson
2. Felix Pie
3. Kris Bryant?

Bryant is the real deal, for sure. After watching a few USD games this year, I completely understood why this guy is projected to be so great. His plate coverage, easy swing, and eye for balls and strikes are second to none. The Cubs got a good one, and his potential is still incredibly high.

I was disappointed we didn't get Appel, but I think Bryant will be very serviceable for the long haul. excited to see what the next year or two brings.

VERY scared though about the Cubs propensity to ruin young talent though, for whatever reasons.

He doesn't have quick-twitch reflexes (although he is a decently fast baserunner), so he isn't the most deft thirdbaseman out there, but at 6' 5'' his range is great and his arm is really, really strong with an effortless motion.

ETA: Could be a Troy Glaus type of 3B/1B guy if the Cubs get a 3B who is an exceptional fielder.

Different talent, different leadership. No worries here.

This guy was Mizzou's friday night starter. He had something like a sub 2.00 ERA and lost 11 games last season. LSU beat him 1-0 I think. He's got talent. He had zero run support at Mizzou.

Yea we also point to the failures and never the success.

Prior was a huge success in scouting and devlopment (even though he was just about ready right out of college)...until he got the bigs and met dusty baker.
I also think we developed castro nicely, just brought him up too soon before the between the ears stuff was sorted out.

I don't see this front office caving to fan pressure and bringing up anyone too soon...with that said i hope to see baez by september call ups next year.

That comparison has been made before, and i love hearing it every time.

I still think he ends up as a corner outfielder, but i'm hoping chances are at least 50/50 he sticks at 3rd

Speaking of 3rd, no more than a year ago the cubs had absolutely no depth at 3rd (vitters was really the only guy) now it's arguably one of our strongest and deepest positions in the minors.

How early can they call him up? Anything is better then Castro right now.

Bryant? 2015 most likely

Not true, and also he plays short so Bryant wouldn't do much for you. Just trying to get handle on the angry mob's opinion in a 90+ loss season.

Is castro the new whipping boy? Does everyone still love barney?
