I would of thought it to be much higher

quote:

NEW ORLEANS - Two new studies indicate that Louisiana black bears are gradually becoming more numerous, with the three main populations totaling about 500.

Whether they can survive without federal protection is the topic of a third, incomplete study.

The studies are being presented at public meetings Monday in Pointe Coupee Parish and Tuesday in Morgan City.

University of Tennessee graduate students estimated the numbers in two parts of the Atchafalaya Basin through DNA analysis of hair snagged in barbed wire. Their adviser, Joe Clark, says he believes there are about 130 in the coastal area and 60 to 70 in the upper Atchafalaya.

Harold Schoeffler filed the lawsuit that got the bears listed as threatened. He says they're on the way to recovery but probably still have a long way to go.

The species coming back after so many were killed by vehicles on I-49 is truly amazing

A key to ever having hunting again is whether the populations are mixing

I do not know how many bear are in the state of Louisiana. What I do know is a federal biologist told me years ago that if they released the actual numbers on the Louisiana Black Bear 2 things would happen.

1. The biologist were in fear of losing their funding and may be sent to another part of the country to study a different species.

2. The public would demand something be done to limit the numbers in their area. According to the fellow I was speaking with this notion comes from fear and simple lack of understanding by the general public.

What I got from that conversation was that the biologist and others in the black bear community have set their roots in this part of the world.(Kids in school, become members of a local church, involved in the community....ect.) They do not want to pack and leave in the middle of their life. The other thing I grabbed is what makes me angry. The whole "We are with the government and we know what is best" type attitude. The only way to sway the opinion of the general public is to make those people comfortable or find a way to profit from the issue. The federal wildlife has done neither. I am hole heartedly against the feds dishing out money to make folks happy so I think some education efforts might ease the concerns of John Q. Public.

My conversation with the federal biologist was on the banks of the Tensas where he was setting a trap for a nuisance bear in 1999-00ish.

It has to be higher. 500 is probably a very good estimate but there is no way they have every bear tagged and/or know the whereabouts of every bear living in Louisiana.

Difficult for bear to outcompete feral hogs. Hogs breed faster and eat much of the mast on the ground in the fall. Not sure if they get stuck focusing on feeders, but there is some reason all these deer hunters are bitching about them.

Were they counted before or after the big I-49 bear slaughter of 2012?

500 is such a BS number. I travel to all remote corners of Louisiana for work and play, and I can confidently say I've seen between 30 and 40 bears in the past 6-8 years. Taking the low number, I've seen over 7% of the population? Get real.
