Does anyone care to share your most success to date in investing, or biggest failed investment? And if so, will you? I would prefer to keep this conversation geared towards tax advantaged/taxable accounts. An example of one I would not prefer to be included in the conversation is a degree.
I am interested in knowing what type of road is ahead being on the front end of my investing career. I have a 1 year old 401(k), 2 month old IRA and 3 day old taxable account. Aiming for prosperity with little investing wisdom to start.

I like buying and holding various index funds forever. So they are both my greatest success and greatest failure.

I sold apple at 680, which I thought was maybe a mistake at the time.

success and failure wrapped into one.
success:
sold a 5 bagger yesterday gambling on FNMA.
failure:
had i not been gordon gekko greedy it could have been a 10-12 bagger.
so unfortunately, a decent win is left feeling like a soul crushing defeat.

In high school I turned about 1000 dollars in to 1600 dollars investing in BAC and Ford.
I also lost about 500 bucks investing in a company called MELA. It was really weird because I bought the stock and then they produced their first product and went up a little then the product got sent to the FDA and subsequently approved and then went down. I was very confused to say the least.

I pressed the hardway bets on a craps table one time. Didn't work out.

My family bought 20k of stock in a company that was expanding. Also ended up loaning them 100k, of which 66k has been paid back.. It was a good idea, but they executed it terribly. One guy specifically was the source of all the problems, and he is now under federal indictment for some of his activities.

I opened a futures trading account in college with $500. Went long on soybean minis and a cotton call option and lost nearly every dime.
I convinced my wife that I knew what I was doing and I had absolutely no clue. It took years for me to rebuild her confidence in me

Piling money into an XOM DRIP for years was a great investment and set me up well for when I finished school. Some of those shares may have doubled twice during that period, and the dividend reinvestment option was a great wealth builder too.

Good luck
Look at it this way, you absolutely can't do worse than I did

I've been extremely lucky. Out of all of my stock and ETF transactions I've only "lost" money on one.
Where I really bang my head is not knowing when to get out. I'll be up 20% in 3 months on an investment and then it takes a nose dive. I still come out ahead but if I would have sold earlier I would have been golden.

Biggest success - rode gold futures position from Feb 2011 to May 2011. 400% return.
Biggest Failure - missed the gold blow up from 1475 to 1920.

my first time playing with stocks on Scottrade, invested a little bit into DNDN at $4, didn't check it for months, then realized it went up to $20+ a share, so sold it. Used this money to then invest into AVNR in which i bought at about $1.09 a share, it is now up to about $3.40 a share. had a few other forgetable stocks which i sold for losses but have gained much more than i lost.

My failure:
From reading this board I bought about $30,000 of MVIS 4 or 5 years ago. It's worth around $3,000 today. I'm still holding onto it because I think the technology will be big in the near future and because, frick it, it's only worth $3,000.
My success:
I invested in an ambulatory surgery center in 2008 - 6% ownership (6 shares) at $6,000 per share. I have received around $1.1 million in distributions since then. In addition we sold a majority ownership at the end of 2012. As part of that I sold 2 shares for just over $400,000 each.

Failure: Had a self directed IRA. The advisor had me in a company called Skytel which was bought out by Worldcom. Those shares went from over $40 down to $1.50 roughly and I thought it would be good to buy more at that price. It all went to $0.
Success: Just buying into my 401k every payday without fail, rebalancing, maxing out and not bailing out of the stock and bond markets. (stick with the plan).

Success:
Correctly predicting that I should invest all my money I have saved up from gifts and working part time in HS (about 3-4000) in "failing" banks that were of the "Too Big To Fail" variety
Failure: Not selling my dad on the idea and havin him open up a roth IRA for me because he said the market was too "volatile" (which is stupid because it is always effing volatile.
Wanted to invest in Citi, Goldman, AIG, BAC and Wells Fargo
At the time I wanted to do it I would have netted some 10000$ in profit if sold right now
