I hope that when it's time to replace him, they don't measure the potential candidates by their love of LSU but rather their broadcasting ability

Jim is fine and I like listening to him when I can't be at games. Good voice, good calls. He will make a mistake from time to time but given that he's doing it live with no script, name me someone who is perfect all the time! And there's no mistaking his passion for LSU.

As for the people who dislike him...remember where you are hearing the complaints...The Rant...and take it with a grain of salt.

25-50 people on a message board (if that) do not constitute an entire large state university's fan base.....

i used to really like him and considered him an icon of LSU sports. while i still consider him an icon, he's an icon i can't stand to listen to anymore because of his negative attitude. it's like he's gotten bitter in his old age and lost his perspective

Aggies hate Dave South, but probably not as bad as we hate Hawthorne. Chad Hastings would spend hours on Austin Talk Radio discussing his hatred for South.

I was listening to the Ole Miss game on the Big 870 last night (all the way from Corpus Christi, you gotta love 870's signal strength) and it occurred to me that in all my years of listening to Hawthorne, about 25 years, I have never heard him crack a joke. It's not his job to be a comedian, sure, but I think a little slice of comic relief every now and again can be good for the flow of broadcasting a game, especially baseball, which can be dry. Some broadcasters take it to the other extreme and try to be Jay Mohr when they're not even close. UT's Craig Way does a nice job of mixing it up.

You can't make a comment about Craig Way. A certain poster will be along here shortly to call you a liar. It isn't possible for LSU fans to ever hear another school's broadcast.

Don't base your impression of the LSU fans' like or dislike of Jim Hawthorne by the contents you read on this site.
I am a Jim Hawthorne fan and have read many stupid remarks/comments regarding him from several idiots on this site. Lots of ignorant folks on this site (hell, I'm probably one, too!)
KEEP ON TALKING, JIM!

I doubt anyone actually hates or dislikes him. You can like him and still think he isn't good at his job.

Hawthorne is odd in that he's a decent basketball play by play man. He's less than good calling a football game and down right horrible doing baseball.

The key seems to be the faster the sport the better the results from Jim.

Jack Cristil is idolized and revered at Mississippi State.

Jim is viewed as a nega-Tiger by the posi-Tigers when he calls out poor play. Just Kidding Posi's
I Like Jim and always like Jim he has an interesting voice to listen to and he gets exciting during his play calling.

It's not even a big minority of our fan base; it's a few dozen posters on TD that whine and bitch about everything, and I'm not talking about those that poke fun at him.

Hawthorne is annoying at times, and he is aging and screws up a couple of calls a games, which he corrects afterwards. So what? Listen to all the others out there and the only great one is Jim Henderson.

does the fanbase really dislike Hawthorne!? ... I mean I would say we nitpick over some of his calls and the pronunciation of words, but other than that I personally see no fault in the guy.

He loves LSU, get's excited when things happen well, and when things are going unwell, he'll tell it like it is. I don't think some LSU fans realize how good of a commentator he actually is.

Maybe someone should go take a count in this thread about who has done more name calling and bitching.
Positigers or negatigers?

Generally, in these threads, the rabid Hawthorne supporters are much more vitriolic than the people that would just rather a competent baseball broadcaster.

It's tough to listen to a game when the announcer doesn't actually describe what's going on in the game. And that happens regularly with Hawthorne. Too often he stops describing the play to complain about the outcome of said play.

He also skews negative way too often.

A mispronunciation here and there isn't a big deal, but when he consistently mispronounces our starting short stops name for the entire year, it's a little much.
