I never got into Lost when it first started and have been meaning to watch the entire series. Well I started watching it over the weekend and 11 episodes in I really like it and understand why it had such a huge following. Most of the characters are likable and I don't find myself hating anyone yet.
What's the M/TV board's opinion on the show? I know there was a lot of controversy about the end, but that's a long ways away for me. Are there any seasons that jump the shark and are tough to get through?

the beginning half of season 3 gets kinda stagnant be/c the writers were unsure what they doing, but once they figured it out towards the end of season 3, it never really slows down

I was never really disappointed until it actually ended. It is the most addicting show I've ever watched and would still recommend it to anyone, despite the last season

I've never been so emotionally invested in a show.
At the time, it was my favorite show. Too many questions were left unanswered for me though.
The character arcs and their individual denonments were very satisfying

Now that the show is not airing anymore, and you can rifle through episodes and seasons pretty fast/easily, it doesn't really drag. There were some spots that did drag on back when it was airing because of the writers' strike, but I found upon rewatching the series that when you're moving through the show at a good pace it doesn't really drag like it seemed to back then. So you'll be fine.
Just know that there will be some parts of the show (episodes or storylines) that don't really affect things (like the overall plot) too much (that was a big gripe about season 6) and you should be fine and just enjoy the ride...and it's a hell of a ride, and I'd easily recommend the series to anyone who hasn't seen it.
As for the ending...like you said, some loved it and some hated it. I, for one, loved it and thought it was great. I hope you do as well.
One of the most enthralling shows I've ever been a part of, and I am glad I was able to watch it as it aired, from pilot to finale. That being said though, I'm jealous that you're getting to experience it for the first time.

There are a few series that I've re-watched with my wife that she never saw and I felt the same way watching it again. I wish I could reset my brain and start 24, Fringe, or House all over again.

LOST kinda made "jumping the shark" an artform though. Hell the show basically jumped the shark when the Monster killed the pilot and the polar bear shows up. It does in some ways, but its always very enjoyable. Just keep an open mind and you should enjoy it.
And I think the final episode was the best episode of the show if that helps.

the season 3 finale might have been my favorite moment of live TV history.

I love the music of Lost. Here is a clip of some of the music from the show. I think its one of the reasons so many people felt emotionally connected to it.

I've jumped into shows and thought they were awesome at the beginning but by the end was laughing. (Flash Forward, The Event, Revolution)

Absolutely, the production quality of this show was incredible. It was extremely well done, and the score of the show second to none.

i second what CoCo said. I watched it from start to finish via network tv. I don't think i will ever be as invested in a show again.

Agreed. Especially now that I am so hesitant to get invested in a show since everything I seem to like gets cancelled within a season or two these days.

As the resident Lost hater (and a person who does love the show as well), I'll say this:
Lost is an experience more so than most shows, and it thrives on giving you something that isn't like anything else. It isn't well constructed or well written, it often contains weak acting. If you are someone who likes consistent narrative, you will probably want to shoot yourself at multiple points. If you don't like red herrings, you WILL shoot yourself.
But if you can get past all of that, it is a lot of fun.

The last 3-4 episodes of season 3 are some of the best in the series.

Not that I care, but you might wanna edit the first part of your post just since the OP isn't there yet. That's a pretty big spoiler.
