We have to win sooner than we think...

Not talking about this year per se – I'm perfectly fine with Monty throwing Henry, Miller and Rivers into the fire and let them sink or swim over playing a proven vet like Mason who has no future with this team. This year is all about figuring out who we keep going into this offseason.
Next season, however, we have to compete for a playoff seed and it's all because of Eric Gordon's player option.
With this year being a wash, we essentially have two years to show Gordon that we can establish a winning pedigree here and not just be all potential. Enough so that we can get him to exercise the option or even sign a long term extension.
Worse comes to worse, we enter a Chris Paul situation where we will get the idea that Gordon won't exercise the option and we will be forced to try and trade him. Only difference will be that he won't get the return value that Paul did.

Ego would be a bloomin idiot to walk away from AD, Rhyno and whatever two great additions we have at pg & center this summer.

This.
Only reason I may not want him gone at that point is if one of our star players suffers a significant injury

And those would be?

Somebody doesn't know how NBA salary caps work.
If we make one "great" signing (and if by great you mean high-profile) then the best we can do after that is sign Mason Jr.-type players.

if the OKC model (which is what most people talk about on here) is the one being followed...the thunder went 23-59 their first year in OKC...followed by a 30-52 year...then they flipped to a 52-30 year in their third season.
if that happened, i'd shite my pants

OKC didn't have one of their best players with a max player option to put the pressure on them though.

wasn't saying anything about that. simply stating a fact, brah.
eric gordon isn't the franchise player. that's AD...have plenty of years to make him happy. can't speed up a rebuilding process just because of gordon. this shite takes time and sometimes a bit of luck.

We probably would've finished at .500 this year if we stayed healthy.
I think we win 45-50 next year if we add another piece and some depth. That also includes AD and AR improving.

Ok well when your franchise player is defensive-minded, then you need a above-average to great offensive player and that's Gordon.

gordon will almost certainly not exercise the player option.
the new cba rules give players no reason to do so

According to the new CBA, when it is ratified, Williams can sign a two-year extension during the season that would be tacked on to the two years left on his current contract, bringing the total value of the deal to approximately four years and $70 million. If he waits until after the season, he could get a contract for five years worth $100 million from the Nets, or a four-year, $70 million deal from anybody else.

Well that depends who we pick up during the offseason

Not to me. If we don't have one of our big 3 injured for half the season, we're a playoff team this year. AD will be better next year. We're definitely a playoff team next year with our current roster. If we upgrade it, we should expect to be a 4 or 5 seed.

FIFY, bruh

The OKC "model" has worked for them, but they were very fortunate with the draft picks they had and the way they fell. Note, btw, that keeping that group together isn't easy. That "model" is not the only way to build a contender (small market or not).

That's a strong statement. We need an immediate starter at SF and improvement at every position on the bench except for PF.
If Gordon were healthy this year, we still would have a tough time making the playoffs. I'm certainly not expecting us to be a 4-5 seed next season unless Dell works some magic in the offseason
