In short, yes, you make a valid assumption.

For rock? Nope.
There are definitely better decades for country and jazz.

The bands then weren't at the level of popularity as the Beatles, Led Zepplin, etc. But they were just as great......and way mote of them. Lots of obscure stuff
..I.e Gun Club,..ThinWhiteRope, Green On Red.....

The Police, Elvis Costello, The Clash, and REM were most definitely of that status, albeit for not as long.

No doubt that ten year span transformed pop/rock/soul and probably produced the most intense concentration of superstar artists. That period of time really did change the game.

I would go with 1967-1977.
More funk would fit in.

You can't talk about 65-75 without mentioning Bob Dylan

Yes.

The end of that time period was so terrible that it spawned three major counter-revolutions in pop music:
Disco
Hip hop
Punk
Just saying. I'd say 1977-86 is the strongest era. But everyone is partial to their youth. However, what a revolutionary era of music. We almost completely started over.

Talking '65-'75 you can't leave off the Doors and CCR

How much greater would they have been if Roth had stayed?
Aerosmith was big in the 80's and this was the decade that saw the emergence of Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. For those who didn't care for the harder stuff, there was Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, The Police, and U2.
