Kirby Puckett actually broke the law (aggravated assault). He's in the Hall, and was elected by this group of writers recently.
All of the juicers broke the law too. It's illegal to possess or distribute anabolic steroids without a prescription. And, Kirby Puckett committing a crime should have no bearing on his election for the Hall of Fame. It isn't related to his baseball career in any way.
My take is that the juicers should be voted on based upon their numbers. If they're deemed to be HOF worthy, then they're elected. Anyone proven to have taken a performance enhancing drug should have that information inscribed on his plaque. Same for Pete Rose...he should be in with a sentence or two about his gambling written on his plaque. The Hall of Fame is a museum, and it should tell its visitors the truth about famous moments and players in baseball history. I find that leaving the steroid era players out of the Hall of Fame is doing an injustice to future generations that didn't live through it.

I find it amazing people cant see the massive difference between Bonds and Rose.
There is a massive difference. One guy did something that is against MLB rules, the other did something that was illegal. I don't believe the schmucks who cast HOF ballots work for Major League Baseball so if they choose to never put Bonds into the Hall, so be it.

I second this. Who's to say we haven't already elected someone that used PEDs?

The voter's are idiots if they ignore an era.
I think it has more to do also with them thinking they are above the game because of their voting status.

if we're calling the 90's and early 2000's the steroid era, then the writers need to accept that and vote for players who were the best of their era
not act like hypocrites
most succinctly, this.
Baloo, you make a great argument in this thread.
Besides, if people try to throw Bonds and Clemens out, especially, they obviously never saw them early in their careers.
Regardless both were going to be HoF bound. To me, Bonds is without a doubt top 3 hitters to every play the game.

Yes, they should. My main reason for voting yes is that the almighty, higher than thou, baseball writers should not pick and choose who they think was juicing and who they think was clean. There is no way to verify if someone was clean. So, I think it is arbitrary and ridiculous to punish the best players of that area by not voting for them, while at the same time voting for marginal HOFer's because they are supposedly "clean."
If there is one thing the PED area should have taught us is that everyone is suspect. To vote for a Mike Piazza or Bagwell over a Mark McGwire because you think the former did it right is bizarre.
Either no one from that era should get in, or vote the best in. Baseball didn't ban these guys; so, put 'em in. Put them in a special wing if you want, but they should be in the hall.

Let's also just try to sweep under the rug that these guys brought baseball back for better or worse. The homerun races were great TV. To completely ignore that is wrong.

Very true. Tons TV sets were tuned into at-bats by Sosa, McGwire and Bonds when it came down near the end of the season and they were jumping each other every other day.

They can get into the HOF when Pete Rose does

Do you think they should keep out those who were known steroid users like Bonds, Sosa, Clemens, and McGwire?

These idiot baseball writers and their sanctimonious hypocrisy have made the HOF like some b.s. high school clique. The gatekeepers to the hall are guys like Rob Parker.

We have. I'd be shocked if Alomar wasn't using them. The late 90s Orioles team were the most steroid abusing team of all time.

It's all or nothing, imo. If you aren't gonna vote for the guys you named, then don't vote for others from the same era. IE: I wouldn't vote a Piazza or Bagwell in over Sosa or Bonds because I thought those guys were clean. I think public opinion was that Palmeiro was maybe the one clean guy on the steroid panel... Whoops!
I just don't follow the logic of putting in lesser guys because they are perceived as being clean.
Also, didn't Clemons beat his rap? Or is there some other conclusive evidence he used?
