Quick question: how did you deal with years in which the teams on this list finished out of the top 25? There had to be a number of such years.
Each team had at least one year where they didn't finish in the top 25. My formula in coming up with the average ranking was:
- Assign points to each ranking - 1 gets 25 points, 2 gets 24 points, 3 gets 23 points, etc...
- I then added up the points to get a total and divided by # of years (8). This gave me x
- I then did 25-x which gave me final average ranking
For example, Ohio St. had a point total of 149. 149/8 = 18.625. 25-18.625 = 6.375
In years where a team finished unranked, they received no benefit from it. If someone is a mathematician and tells me my formula is wrong, I can adjust.

why did you subtract from 25? I don;t understand what it adds to the formula, unless you just wanted to use a golf score approach.

also UF and AU were down last year. and we skimmed by bama the first time. They destroyed us in the rematch.
Pumpers have an alibi for every bad thing that happens. Negas have one for every good thing (we "skimmed by bama the first time"?!)
As is often the case, the truth is most likely in the middle. What we have to go on now is wpc and titles. And Miles' body of work in that regard is damn good. Better than everyone except Saban.

I hate LSU fans, especially NegaTigers.
Don't they realize that this is the very best the LSU football can accomplish, this is the Golden Age of LSU footbal AND Coach Miles is the best LSU coach of all time?
Such ingrates. I hate them.

80% is pretty awesome until you realize it's an average of under 10 wins per 12 game season and our division rivals have 3 NCs and probably 90% wins. I still like Les ok but the offense has entrenched us as 2nd in the West, 2011 being an outlier where dynamic defensive and ST players overcame the tag any offense.

I want somebody to tell me why they believe the next 8 years will be better than or as good as Miles first 8 years.
Given the offensive ineptitude for the past 5 years, the discipline problems, the occasional inexplicable decision, etc., I would say Miles has been very lucky to have had this success so far.
I don't think the luck will hold.

do you realize miles SHOULD have 5 to 7 more wins in his record? that were the fault of on the field discipline, player management or game management? we listed them the other day.
Every single coach in the country has lost games they could have, and should have, won.
Hell, Saban has lost to UAB, Arkansas (on some last second nonsense in 2001), a Florida team that went 8-5 during our 03 championship year, Iowa (on some last second nonsense), ULM, and Utah.

Feel better about what? The state of the program? It makes me realize that we are in the best 8 year stretch in the history of the program and the golden age of LSU football as some have said. It makes me realize that we are a top 5 program over the past 8 seasons and the only programs that can legitimately claim to be better than us in that timespan are Ohio St., Alabama and Florida.
It makes me realize that the calls for a new offensive approach, coordinator, philosophy, etc...are definitely justified, but the calls for a new head coach are about as asinine as it gets since we are a top 5 program over an 8 year stretch with our current coach.
I may be labeled a "sunshine pumper" for saying all that, but I think it makes me more of a level headed person with some perspective than a sunshine pumper.

and if not for the Bluegrass Miracle we drop out of the top 25 and barely make a bowl game

what the frick does that matter?
seriously.
Well Captain, in college football rankings matter more than any other sport. In the current system, they are a major factor in determining who goes to the national championship game. In the future system, they will serve as a reference for the panel making a decision about who plays in the 4 team playoff.
The final rankings let us know who were the best teams once the season is complete according to the voters. The average final ranking gives a good perspective of who were the best teams over a certain timespan. It shows if a program is consistent, or if they were only good for a couple years during that timespan.
Take Auburn and LSU for example. Would you say they have been just as good of a program as LSU from 2005-2012 since we have the same number of bcs championships over that time period? Would you not take into account that they finished unranked in 4 of those seasons compared to 1 unranked season for LSU. Would you not take into account that LSU has an average final ranking of 8.63 in that time frame compared to Auburn's 16.88?

OK we have established that Miles sucks because he can't beat saban 75% of the time. So what you are saying whether yall realize it or not is that ALL coaches suck except saban.
And we have established that Miles has faults... yet he has a great record compared to EVERYONE despite having to play in the toughest division of the toughest conf. in the country!
Still don't see why you would want to trash a guy that is doing better head to head against Saban than statistically anyone else on earth would.
Same record harder conf. = better!
so
Miles has performed better than all other coaches except Satan.... statistically. Yet we should bring in someone that has a worse record from an easier schedule???

Well only one of those years resulted in a national championship, and anybody not named Choctaw would say Miles was very lucky with the way everything fell out to get in that game. And don't say that every National Champ needs a bit of luck, b/c 2 losses.
Even in the one year he didn't lose two games, he managed to screw that up by switching to his favorite, and terrible, QB.
Maybe the playoff system will be his new source of luck, as it should make it more likely a 2-loss team can win it all.

And Saban wasn't? He would have lost to Texas if their star qb hadn't of gotten hurt at the very beginning of the game.
Saban ND this go round and they are the 7th best team in the country at best.
Sounds pretty lucky to me.
So if you want to talk luck the sword cuts both ways.
