Will I be required to testify in his murder trial now that I have posted in this thread?

This is my go to. With an extended magazine. Keep next to the bed. Along with my Glock 22 .40 S&W with streamlight laser/light combo. Wife has .38 S&W airlight on her side and Ruger 9mm. Then under the bed.....shite GETS REAL!

Probably. So can you be bought?
For the record the defense would like to point out that " home defense" was the question asked and at know time did I state or imply that I would kill someone in cold blood but rather only use a firearm in a life or death situation as a last resort.
Eta: so tell me about this 870.

Well first I would notify authorities if you're serious.
Second, I would pick a Remington 870 with 00 Buck before any of those.

Talked to my attorney buddy and as it turns out booby trapping your house is very illegal.

Does your wife mind if you kill him? If not I'd grab the two pistols and go to work.
If she wants him alive I'd probably pepper spray him and then put a bullet in each knee for being an idiot.

really? never thought about customizing your home security system as illegal..

First of all, I sincerely hope the doomsday scenario doesn't materialize, but it's commendable for you to be prepared.
1. Formally contact law enforcement to lay the groundwork for your suspcions of his evil intent.
2. Start preparations for home security. It's not to late to get a dog as an "early warning system."
3. Consider getting a personal defense lawyer on retainer.
4. Go buy an inexpensive, but reliable, pump actioin, 12 gauge shot gun.
5. If you'd rather not have the shotgun, then I'd follow the advice in the following earlier post:
Don't worry about excessive penetration w/ the 223. Depending on the ammo used, the 223 is less prone to excessive penetration in a house than are many self defense handgun rounds. This was discussed in the following thread and it's links.

Good luck........

As a rule pistols are for fighting your way to a long gun. Since you already have a long gun, there you go.

Why don't you have a shotgun?
I do but it's in LA where I duck hunt
You should get another one, no other option.

Use the 1911, just to see if the local news reports that you used a "military, assault-style weapon."

B) Glock 21 .45 w/ 2 thirteen round mags hollow points

and he will probably have a cheap 38 on him.

My suggestion is to go buy an 870 express home defense model. And of course make sure you notify the authorities.
As TOTH said, it's not too late to get a dog. Dogs are probably more effective than guns for deterring someone from breaking and entering.

TOTH has offered good advice. I'll add No. 6
6. While you're out buying that shotgun, pick up some buckshot (ignore the birdshot suggestions) AND buy yourself a holster for that Glock.
There's nothing that says you have to limit yourself to a single weapon. Remember, "one is none ............"
If BIL shows up, call 9-1-1 with shotgun in hand, Glock on hip. If BIL comes into your home, lock yourself and family in bedroom, take cover behind dresser, (or bed, if that's all you have for cover) and aim shotgun at the "fatal funnel."

Man this borders on being premeditated murder.

If it is a B and E you are in the clear. If the dude is a wanted and criminal and he breaks in your house and you shoot him with your AR-15 the cops will probably thank you.

That's what I'm thinking. I live in a small town in a very red state.
