I have to say that he writes better combat scenes than GRRM has ever dreamt of.
Yeah, Jordan was probably the best in the business at writing battle/combat scenes. Though Steven Erikson is right there with him.
Spoilers for WOT as well...
And yeah, the tavern thing gets used a bit too much. Though Rand had been training with a true blademaster in Lan for quite a while at that point, so between that and the luck of the tavern it is kinda okay, but still a bit lame.

WOT SPOILERS:
But we had been led to believe that the sword masters who wore a Herron marked blade were the equivalent of Jaime lannister. Rand had like six months training with a sword..... Just kinda weak IMO.
Now don't get me wrong it was a badass scene while reading it but it just lingered with me and I came to realize how big of a cop out it was.

wot spoilers...
Agreed. That's one of the main reasons WOT isn't one of my very top fantasy series, despite the badass scenes. Just way too much farmboy grows up to be uberbadass with little training. And that goes for Rand, Perrin, Matt, Egwene, and Nynaeve.

WOT SPOILERS
as of right now Perrin, Lan and Nynaeve are really the only three characters I like.
Perrin is just a straight boss, Lan is well Lan and Nynaeve just seems like a sexy little mynx.
Rand has turned into a little bitch, egwene is the dany of the WOT world and Matt is a shady little frick.
I'm hoping some of those change because I really want to like Rand at least.

That's gonna make a little more sense as you read on, its not just the taveren thing. I thought books 4-6 were probably as good as ASOIAF but the story comes to a pretty abrupt halt soon after.

Can we kill the WOT discussion?
It's on my to read list and someone is going to start quoting your posts without the spoiler tags sooner or later.

I am going to read WOT so let's end the hijack-
I used to post on Westeros.org till I started just asking Ran stuff by IM. We had a blast - he really is without a doubt a walking encyclopedia of ASoIaF...never got much of a response outta him on the crackpot theories (this was pre 'Dragons publication) till he admitted that he had been given a pre-(final) edit copy of a lot of the dragons chapters to preview for inconsistencies by fat man himself.
Hadn't really lurked there much since last year. Tried to IM him once recently but no response. Guess he's busy making YouTube vids with the chick I can't understand.

Bestest...thread....evaahhhh!!!!
Nice job getting this thread going, Cotton.
I'm just glad I have someplace to "read" ASOIAF until the next book.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
I think it may have been you earlier in this thread that suggested LoLL to me. I finished it last week. I wanted to thank you for the suggestion. It took a while to get going, but I was very into the book after the half way point. My only thing was that I really have no desire to read the next novel. While AGOT had a conclusion, there was plenty left making you want to read. I felt like LoLL didn't end that way. The story came full circle at the end.

Whenever Vargo Hoat talks, does anyone else imagine him to talk like Butt-Head? Whenever I think of his appearance, I give him a hybrid of Butt-Head and the hangman from a couple of Mel Brooks films, along with an added goatee.

Yeah, Lies is a pretty self contained story, you can almost just read it as a single novel. And honestly the second book is a bit of a let down anyway, it's kinda like comparing AFFC to ASOS. Not a bad book, just doesn't hold up to Lies. I am eagerly awaiting book 3 whenever he gets done editing it however.
And you're welcome for the suggestion, always happy to give book recs. It's how I find most the new authors I read myself.
Now I just need to get some folks to actually read Joe Abercrombie. I barely ever run across folks who've read him (outside of say the westeros board and people I've let borrow his books), and he rocks.

I always picture him speaking like Lou Holtz with an accent.

I have a friend that is reading SoS right now. It is fun hearing his theories about what will happen next. He has the right idea about some things, but is way of on most things.

Is that Littlefinger's actor or Robb's?

Real quick hijack:
Is there a site like towerofthehand.com for the Malazan series? The only thing about those books for me is I don't really know what a lot of the races are supposed to look like. I know the Jaghut have big tusks, but what are all the T'lan races supposed to look like? And a site to help keep most of the characters straight would help.
Maybe someone can help out real quick and end the hijack.
