2 year TV ban
Loss of 15 scholarships per year for 5 years
5 year bowl ban
Immediate transfers
All revenue generated from the football program gets donated to charity for 5 years

But I hate Penn State, so I may be being too harsh. I really don't know.

Can the NCAA even individually punish people? What can they do, just tell them they can't have an NCAA job anymore? Do any of them even work at Penn State anymore? Seems like it would just be business as usual with no penalties if that were the case, but I could be wrong on a few of my assumptions.

-Free transfer without having to sit out
-5 year bowl ban
-5 year television ban
-Reduction of scholarships for 5 years (not sure on the exact number).
-Will not be eligible for Big 10 Championship game (if they were to win the Leaders division). The second place team would get the opportunity to play and represent the Leaders division.
-Significant portion of home game revenue goes to charity.

I don't see how a TV ban would work, say it was in place for last year, would all the Bama fans be out of luck when they played Penn St. Just give all TV revenues to charity. If its an actual ban your now punishing fans.

Rename the team the Nittany Pedophiles for the nextfive years.

Oh and exile them from the B1G.

EDIT: Oh, how about that they have to vacate all victories during Paterno's coaching term.

I like this, except the tv ban. All that does is hurt the team they are playing.

I dont see punishing the school or team or present coach in any way whatsoever.

The people who knew of it and did nothing should be in jail.
They are accomplices, in my book. Jail time.

Everyone involved should be fired and sent to prison.

End of it.

I'm still unsure how severe the penalties should be - the situation is unique for how horrifying and unusual it seems to be. More than anything else seeing the students and others holding a vigil for Paterno's statue this week convinced me of how bad of a culture problem there is at PSU right now. I would not expect everyone to abandon Paterno's legacy immediately but there is a time and place for everything and rushing to preserve his legacy over the concerns of the victims of rape and abuse seems just way over the top to me.

If they were an ethical and consistent institution the NCAA could do something healthy along the lines of insist on more thorough separation of power away from the head football coach (and make clear this is the rationale for their punishment). This would be a good thing for college sports on the balance - the problem is I'm obviously not convinced the NCAA has been or will be an ethical and consistent institution.

i like this concept with modification. i am opposed to the death penalty. i think their punishment should be subject to them presenting a plan that would prevent this from happening again (the cover up). maybe no post season play for a few years, significant reduction is schollies, not eligible for big 10 championships, present athletes transferring with no restrictions or waits to participate, etc.

I wouldn't punish the football team for the deeds of a few weak men.

What I hate about every one of these punishments is they're too late.

USC, OSU, Miami etc. etc. are all going to really show people when the kids/coaches who caused the problems are all in the NFL making millions...

I don't know how you fix the problem but I hate punishing the kids who want to play for PSU and they won't get to play in a bowl game for their entire career

What penalties would you dish out?

For each year that Penn State covered for Sandusky, loss of football revenue (with proceeds going to charities dealing with child sexual abuse). They can still play on TV (so the other team doesn't get hurt) but no revenue. Bowl ban for the entire time. Any player who wants to transfer can do so without losing eligibility and the player not to count against scholarship limits.

Anyone that's found guilty by criminal trial, permanent lifetime irrevocable ban from NCAA athletics. If not charged due to lack of evidence but preponderance of the evidence would have shown they were involved, 2-5 year removal from NCAA athletics (the higher up, the longer the removal) and with "show cause" afterwards for reinstatement.

After five years I would consider lifting some of the punishments but only if Penn State demonstrated that they had seriously changed their ways.
