Semin’s finding out exactly how valued a guy who only scored 21 goals last year and has never played two-way hockey: not much. The Caps actually have $10 million left in cap space and still need a winger – they should offer him $8 mil over two years just for the hell of it. Though it is pissing me off the Caps didn’t make a push for PA Parrenteau. I love that guy.

Thoughts on the Wild signings: I love it. First, anyone you get as a UFA is pretty much by definition overpaid. You have to overpay to get an elite UFA and you make up for it by underpaying the young guys on your roster. The length on those deals is ugly, but Minnesota has been largely irrelevant and a big move like this is something they have to do to shake up a moribund franchise.

Also, the timing is great. The Wild have decent young talent and had a good start before the bottom fell out last year because they have the worst offense in hockey. They play in the worst division in hockey, and its getting worse – the Flames are hellbent on trying to make the worst front office moves possible, the Avs are in neutral, and the Oilers are still a few years away. OK, the Nucks are awesome, but they look like a team that has peaked. Make an aggressive move now right as your prospects are graduating to the NHL. And do it before the Oilers pass you. It’s a bold, risky move that I wish more teams would make.

On the inverse, WTF are the Stars thinking?

This is one of the oldest teams in hockey whose biggest problem is a porous blueline and the worst special teams in hockey (no exaggeration – they score less PP goals than anyone and they are below avg in the PK). So they trade away Ribiero (a legit 2C), Ott (their best two way player), and Burish (disappointing winger with upside) for two 40 year olds and a 2C who plugs the hole you just created? I’m not against moving your biggest assets to blow up the team’s old core (and the Stars still have an elite 1st line at least on the wings). Oh, and the 2C you got, Roy, is the same age as Ott and in the last year of his deal. But at least you added sort of prospect Cody Eakin, otherwise known as the one undersized young winger the Caps wouldn’t give ice time to.

So now the team got even older, they still have crap special teams, and need Kari Lehtonen to repeat his .922 save percentage to make the playoffs. Only now they don’t have Ott to trade during the stretch for prospects. Good luck with that.

Someone's going to pay Semin, I just wonder who.

I think Pitt could be a great fit for him, playin alongside Crosby on a team that's always played hard under Bylsma, could get his head out of his arse with the help of Sid/Geno.

But scares the shite out of me.

I swore off posting but holy damn the Flyers are going in deep for Shea Weber. 14 years $100 million dollars. If Nashville doesn't counter in the next 7 days, he is going to Philly. Wow.

Yeah, he does.

Nashville has said all along they will match whatever he gets and do whatever it takes to keep him in Nashville.

I was pretty surprised Weber signed a deal now instead of waiting til next year to become a UFA. It basically means his entire career is now either Philly or Nashville (except a trade of course).

Also, it's actually, not 14 yrs, $100 million, but now 14 years, $110 million. That alone is a massive cap hit ($7.8 million), but the other interesting thing is that it pays more than half ($56 million) in the first four years (so an average of $14 million a year the first four years).

I'm extremely interested to see if Nashville matches. They're a small-market franchise. It would have to be hard on them to commit that long and for that much money. Also, while the cap hit is high, it's not just the cap hit, but how the deal is structured that's challenging. Putting $14 million into one player for the next four years will be really hard on Nashville's ownership. In addition, they do get a pretty good compensation if they lose Weber in the term of Philly's next four first round draft picks. In that sense, it seems likely they would let him go.

At the same time, Weber means so much to them, not just on the ice, but off it, especially with the loss of Suter. You also have the fact that, while the first four years are tough, once you get through that, the rest of the deal is pretty solid, assuming he can keep up his play (that cap hit will always be high for Nashville standards, but he's an elite defenseman). And finally, though the four first round picks are nice, it's likely that they will all be in the 20-30 range because they're the Flyers (of course, if the Flyers have a down year, like they did a few years ago, they could get a top-5 pick out of it, but I doubt that happens).

I'm very intrigued to see what occurs.

Thought I'd update this a bit:

Jonathan Willis via twitter: The offer sheets seems like a good chance for the Predators to get Shea Weber locked up long-term as long as they are able to get the up-front cash.

Jim Diamond via twitter: Diamond is fairly certain that the Predators would have offered more as it got closer to Sept. 15th.

Sounds like Nashville will indeed match the offer sheet and lock Weber up long term.

Shane Doan update: L.A. Lariviere ?@L_A_theRiver
Doan #Penguins are front-runners, not too far from #SJSharks and #Habs. Not sure who 2-3 others are, but "history and tradition"& market=key

Word out of Phoenix is that Jamison still does not have the money to buy the Coyotes, doesn't sound good at all if you're a Yotes fan.

ETA: The Penguins fired their Medical Team today, shocker. Probably part of Sids contract.

I'm not to excited about this Weber situation. The way I see it playing out is that the Preds match, and trade him after the season.

They should've been arrested. I'll never be confused for a Penguins fan, but the way the organization bungled his rehab was shameful for all hockey fans, as it may have permanently effected Sid's career. That would be a real shame.

Still no word on the Semin front. Amazing this guy can't even get a nibble.

Not exactly pleased with the return. And the funny thing is, we actually had to add some pieces as well for that, not even just Nash.

The thing I don't understand is that deal could have been made six months ago. Howson caved.
