The thing I don't understand is that deal could have been made six months ago. Howson caved.
Looks like it.
Very meh.

After contemplating a little more, I'm not quite as upset (I think I was earlier mainly because of the rumors about Kreider/Stepan being part of the deal). Two potential top-six forwards, a great D prospect to add to a D prospect pool that already is legit with Murray, Moore, Savard, Weber, etc., and another first round pick, so we now have three in a great draft. That's not too shabby.
Nash is a great player (some would say elite, I'm not as sure), but didn't seem like a good leader at all, and has been a huge part of the losing culture we've had. This is a way to finally move on into the new era and move forward, without looking back at the past decade of mediocrity. I will miss him and his contributions to Columbus (on, but also off the ice), but I didn't like him as captain, and now someone like JJ/Umberger can get the C, who I think would be much better. As great of a talent as Nash is, I can't help but wonder if he helped facilitate the country club atmosphere in the locker room. Also, it got rid of his enormous cap hit. So it's not too bad of a trade, though still not great (again, I was hoping for a young potential star forward like a Kreider or Stepan).

Josh Yohe via twitter: Shane Doan’s agent: “Shane is going to visit a couple more teams. I’m pretty sure Pittsburgh will be one of them. He is interested in the Pens.”

Nashville retains Shea Weber.
Good for the Nashville Predators and their fan base.

Philly must now go after Keith Yandle from Phoenix since Weber is off the table.

I saw somewhere that the contracts of Gaborik, Nash, Richards, and Lundqvist combined is more than the Islanders entire payroll.

What a horrible deal for Semin. I thought he'd get more than a one year rental and have to do this all over again. Hell, for 1 year, $7 mil, I'm surprised the Caps didn't just re-up him. They have cap space and there's no longterm commitment.
Well, at least Semin's biggest issue (disappearing in the postseason) won't matter in Carolina.

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: With Chris Kreider and Carl Hagelin still learning, and with Marian Gaborik likely out for the 1st quarter of the season, the Rangers remain interested in Doan. Doan has narrowed his sights on the Rangers, Penguins and Canucks, but it’s unclear if GM Glen Sather will go 4 years. It’s also not known if Doan would come to the Rangers on a 3 year deal.

Everything I am hearing indicates Doan will sign somewhere within a week. The Coyotes, Rangers, Pens and Canucks are the favorites.

Brooklyn is trying to swoo the Islanders to move in with the Nets starting in 2015.

Interdasting.
Win win for the Isles.

I really hope Doan stays in PHX - a really good player but I don't think the rangers need another 35 year old free agent - hasn't worked out since messier and Doan ain't messier

I pray to God the Rags sign Doan. They will be in cap jail with a really old roster. More importantly, it keeps him from the Pens.

Not going to happen, almost 100% now that the sale of the Yotes fell through.

I don't want the Pens to sign him. He's wanting a 4 year deal, and he's 35. A large cap hit for a 37/38/39 year old Doan? No thanks, not worth it.
I'd rather the Pens save the cap space and hit the trade deadline for a Crosby winger and possible D upgrade.
If they do get Doan, I'd be happy for 1-2 years, then hate it.

Crosby makes $8.7 mil per season. Buffalo wants to give Doan $7.5 mil per year. Glad owners are being responsible during this rough time.
