Several Sony Sources Say PS4 is Set for 2013 Release, Won't Be Download Only

There is no official confirmation yet from Sony, but several unnamed insiders have told the Wall Street Journal that their next-gen console is being prepped for its premiere next year.
The news appeared in a report from the WSJ confirming Sony's plans to stick with the traditional optical disk drive over a new download only system, weakening previous rumors that Sony planned to announce a partnership with Gaikai or OnLive at their pre-E3 press conference on Monday.
It also seems unlikely that the new system would opt for a download only console because of the effect it would have on non-digital retail outlets and stores, especially with used game sales that have earned Gamestop an extra $1 billion in sales. Sony and other console makers may have learned a lesson or two from the rapid rise of Apple's iTunes and the effect other online stores can have on traditional retailers that sell CDs, DVDs and even software titles.
It has been sometime since even any unconfirmed news from inside sources have surfaced about Sony's next-gen console. Two months ago, some supposed early specs of the "PS4," nicknamed "Orbis," leaked to the web that showed the new console might require a PlayStation Network account with online activation and would come with an AMD x64 CPU.

Man frick that. When they dropped the PS3 in 2006 they said it would be another decade before they released another console. Not even a full 6 years later and they are officially announcing the release of their next one and I've only had my PS3 for 5 damn years.
frick that noise.
frick that noise.

Not sure what you are crying about. I don't think there has been a single console platform that has ever lasted 10 years. Also, much like PS2 they will probably continue developing titles for another 2 years after the release of PS4.
ETA: You know what happens when a new console releases? Prices of games for the previous one plunge so you can enjoy all of those titles you never picked up.

So you see no problem with them saying that there current console will be their newest one for the next decade only to announce their next console less than 6 years later? shite I didn't get to purchase my first PS3 until the summer of 2007 and then I had to deal without it for 3 months in 2010 because the damn thing died on me out of the blue. I'm not crying, but when I get to play a console for under 5 years before they announce the next one, which will probably cost almost $1,000 and will probably end the online gaming for me and my current crop of games, then yeah I believe I should be able to be mad at this.
fricking Sony.

That is incorrect. They said that the PS3 would be around for 10 years. Much like the PS2 still has games that release for it, a new generation does not kill the old.

What Cachemoney said
If you know anything about gaming you should know damn well that a console can not last a full decade. Outside pressure for nextgen graphics and latest and greatest tech have made this impossible. You can blame our iPhone society for that. I was surprised it took this long for that next console announcement. And I have never seen anything from Sony that guaranteed a decade of PS3. I doubt such a statement exists even.

They guaranteed a life-cycle of 10 years, they didn't promise not to release a new console in the mean time.
PS2 had a ten year life cycle even though PS3 was out during part of that time.

Yeah. This happens every other day.

You have to admit, theres always a better gfx card, motherboard, processor, etc. that comes out every 2 months or so. "This MSI HD Radeon 7850 gfx card is better than this sapphire HD Radeon 7850 gfx card because of this and that." Its too damn complicated for the casual gamer.

get an xbox lol well might not be able to buy em soon

There is always going to be better stuff coming out all the time, but it doesn't mean you HAVE to upgrade. A long as your computer can perform the way you want it to and play the games you want, you are fine. If you build your PC right from the beginning, you are set for a while.
And you would typically space out your upgrades, not doing them all at once.

This, I built my PC 7 years ago, last fall I started to finally upgrade the thing because graphics from the current gen were finally "going over" what my computer could handle. I replaced the gfx, then a little after christmas I bought a new harddrive, now I'm about to buy a new SSHD and a Motherboard / Processor. Instead of having to spend $1000, (which is more than likely the price of this next ps) I will have only spent $400, and I got to spread it out over a year, instead of having to pay for it all at once. This was 7 years mind you - as well.

What's all the fuss about? Either you get a PS4 or you don't. The PS3 is fine and dandy for me right now. The PS4 is going to have to really show me that it is a mammoth upgrade over the PS3 for me to consider it.
If all I ever had was The Show and BF3 and a PS3, I'd be happy.

I feel like the PS4 needs to be a group purchase. I'm happy with the PS3 and I doubt everybody will be buying the PS4 right away. No need to be forever alone
