Are you a better cook...

Than the person who taught you? I learned country homestyle dishes from my mom. Grilling, bbq, gumbo, chili, any large hunk of meat I learned from my dad. Nowadays I can outcook my dad on just about everything but there are still some dishes my mom makes that I can't beat.

No. I might cook different types of food better than my three mentors, but I can't compete with them on what they did best.

this. i've got a greater variety/diversity of things I can cook but on what my parents and grandparents did best--they still kick my arse.

Grandmother: Julia Child without a TV show
Jesse: Maid at home, best creole/soul food at my house every day growing up.
Dorothy: Vacation maid from Webb, MS. Unreal MS Delta food every summer for a month.
Can't even come close to what those three did with their respective specialties.

I taught myself how to cook.
I'm better than I was, but not as good as I will be.

In some ways.
Mostly because I took the time to learn the science of cooking and flavor.
He still has me beat on the art side which comes with experience.

my mom is a great country cook. my dad, god rest his soul, could barely boil water. i still cant beat her on a good country meal.
i hate to admit but but i learned a lot from my paw-in-law from avoyelles parish. wife has told me that i have surpassed him on a few dishes.
my goal is to be better than him so i can give a big

I cook a greater variety of foods than my mom, but what she does best, she does better than me.

I learned how to cook from my grandmother, my ex-husband's grandmother and my neighbor (a black lady in Zachary- not being racist, emphasizing superior pork chop frying skills!). The grandmother's have passed away now but I never cooked better than any of them. I can however cook better than my mom, my ex's mom, and my husband's mom.

My grandma would thrash my arse. Dad probably too. But I throw more money at my food to try to compensate.

I think I have a lot of concepts down better than my mother. she does a lot of dishes better than me still, but I don't think she has the ability to cook outside her comfort zone. she doesn't get how to complete a full flavor with a few styles of cooking, she just throws ingredients together that she thinks may work, but does not have the ability to taste and adapt the flavor to what her goal is.

I'm better on some things than my Mom and the old guys at the hunting camp, but there are others that I just can't beat them on.

Yes. Mon taught me the basics. I experimented a frick ton myself. A lot of trial and error and stoned dishes in the process.

GREAT POST!
I would have to say yes.
My Dad was a great cook...and he learned from my Grandmother (his mom).
I often cook things and say, "They would be proud"!
I knew I became a good cook one day when I cooked a Jambalaya...and my dad came to help and tried some and he said, "This is better than any Jambalaya I have ever cooked"!
I study food and cooking and I read cookbooks and watch shows, and YouTube...I take cooking VERY seriously...probably too seriously.
I love to cook!

All in all I'd say I'm much better than my mother and grandmother. I have a larger repertoire and my best offerings are on par or better than theirs. The fact I had more cooking toys, better access to ingredients and a more adventurous palate helped. In my eyes the magic of my grandmother's cooking was that she did it with only the most utilitarian of cooking tools and locally grown ingredients.
There are a few things I dont match up on, but overall I'm the best I know.

I dont cook. I hired Glass's personal chef when times got hard for him.
