Well, it's three movies. So there's your problem.

In my opinion, its one epic long ten hour film split into 3 parts. Almost no one can sit through a single film for over 10 hours.... 4 hours really.

I didn't do that with Star Wars. I think it is cheating. But I am saying this to the man with 20 movies in his top 5 list.

Theres a clear beginning, middle, and climax as well as different tone in each of the Star Wars films. LotR.... not so much. Its tone from the moment Gandalf is "killed" in Moria is pretty constant throughout the trilogy, and there's no clear beginning in the final two, and no clear ending but in the final film.

I'll make this easy on myself and do it genre by genre, otherwise I would never settle on the list. I enjoy movies for all types of reasons, and the pinnacle of each:

1. The Seven Samurai - Epic/Adventure/"Western"
2. City Lights - Comedy/Romance
3. The Thing - Horror/Science Fiction
4. Vertigo - Thriller/Suspense
5. Die Hard - Action

Sadly I couldn't find room for my favorite film:
Throne of Blood - Drama

First post on this board...figured this was a good thread to jump in.

I define my favorites as movies that I can watch any time they are on. Don't have to be in a particular mood for these. Not necessarily in order

The Princess Bride
Legends of the Fall
Godfather Part 2
The Devil Wears Prada
Red Cliff

Speaking of which, especially, considering it is the one time of year it is played...

Groundhog Day; not because it is on TV right now. I could watch this movie over and over, I always forget the ending.

My top 5 of all time (based primarily on 5 I would watch for the rest of my life) in order:

1. Ghostbusters
2. Groundhog Day
3. Tombstone
4. Stepbrothers (here come the haters)
5. The Dark Knight (now, really, here come the haters)

Funny that two Bill Murray's make the list. Sorry, for anyone that I missed. You are still one of my favorite movies; you just slipped my mind.
