I think at OLB we could pick up Dan Connor. He can tackle anything that moves, and is very athletic.
at S we could pick up Zbikowski, he has decent ball skills, can tackle, and has good coverage skills. He gets alot of PT with the Ravens. He can also Return with Sproles so we can get rid of Roby.
There won't be much room under the cap. Both of these guys could be picked up for a decent price. Unfortunately with the Def needs we won't be able to re-sign Brees, Colston, Nicks, and Meachem.
Brees-no explanation needed he stays
Colston- way too valuable in this offense he stays
Nicks- I don't think we can afford to tie up that much money in two guards. he might walk
Meachem- has never panned out, he does have talent but he can be replaced by a receiver with a smaller contract

If we had to pick between 12 and 77, I think 77 is more valuable to this team. He is by far the best guard in the league. It would suck to see 12 in another uniform, though.

The Defense can't get worse, let Porter and most of the defenders walk, as long as we can keep Nicks and Colston and the offense we can definitely get better on defense on the free agent market. I didn't see a single defensive player on Saturday who deserved to stay besides Greer and Vilma. Why in the Frick are we paying Will Smith? Get that Fricker out of here. Stick Harper as an OLB, GW blitzes him almost 90% of the time anyway. And when he plays coverage he's a handicap. Hate to say that about a Pro-Bowler but just flailing around out there hoping to make a tackle on Vernon Davis ain't gone cut it.

I posted this in the offseason thread:
Our cap situation isn't as bad as previously thought, which means that keeping some of our players won't be as difficult as previously (or currently, according to this thread...) thought.

think youre going a little overboard on your cuts. do you know how cheap some of those players you named are? you know we do need bodies for a full roster right?

I can see Brees taking a pay cut to let some magic be worked.
So he's been working for less money than Sanchez, Stafford, Carson Palmer, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, and others... led his team to their first SB win, playoffs 3 straight years, broken numerous alltime records, and you see him taking a pay cut? Good ganja in Okla I'm thinking.

Brees will get the money he deserves Blu. End of story.
As to the big three FA's. I think we keep them all.
On the receivers I would hope to keep the three guys who each bring a different skill for Brees. We will keep the receivers Brees wants. Period.
Colston (big target) Meachum(stretches the field) Lance (in the slot quicks).

Drew Brees will definitely get a new deal.
Re-signing Colston, Nicks, Dunbar, and Porter should be a top priority, while Daniel, Meachem, and Collins need to stay on board as well.

What is the franchise cost for a Guard?

I fear that 2 of these guys will be in another uniform next year

Def Porter, Colston is back for sure, all depends on Nicks really

The average of the top paid player at that position over the past five years.
I don't have the exact numbers, but Evans was the top paid guard in the NFL in 2009 and made about $8 million.

You're right, there will be casualties, unfortunately.
I think Brees will push for us to keep Colston for sure, as he's likely to be one of the hottest free agents on the market due to his size and good hands.
Depending on who stays or leaves, I have no doubt that Payton and staff will address those in free agency and the draft.

I would hate to see Nicks or Colston in a different uniform. Brees brough Sproles here. Payton and Loomis also got Colston and Nicks in the draft. I trust them, they wont let either one walk without having some kind of plan to go after a WR or Guard in the draft or free agency. Having said that. There's no way we let both walk is there? We have to sign one?

I'll be disappointed if we don't get to keep either Nicks or Colston
If Nicks wants an Evans type deal, I'm not sure how they pull that off with the monster contract Brees will command and well deserve
Seems like tying up that much money into 2 guards is just unsustainable

I think people are undervaluing Porter. We need to resign him.
I also think Nicks is more valuable than Colston.

FWIW, Pat Yasinkas on the NFC South chat thinks that we will resign Nicks AND find a way to resign Colston, but will let Porter walk. I hope he's right (I wouldnt mind keeping Porter for cheap either, but Nicks + Colston way more important).
