Looking at getting a pistol, preferably in the 350 to 600 range, any favorites?

Buddy of mine just got a XD, I like it...other than the fact it nearly blew out my eardrums.

I'm told any sig shoots really smooth I've just never had the opportunity to get my hands on one.

Sig is a wonderful shooting gun. I have two. You may be able to find a used Sig P226 in your price range. Also, the P250 is in your price range I believe but it's a DA only.
I didn't see you specify a caliber.

First question is:
What do you want it for?
Plunking/protection/carry?
Small/medium/big?

400-500 range - Beretta PX4
around 600 - CZ 75b
I have both and have zero complaints. I love the CZ's though.

I read that you liked the Walther P22, it is a fine plinker. You can get the P99 (a very accurate shooter) or the PPQ (which is a pistol I want to get) and the geometry will line up with your pointing.
Almost all the Springfields, Sigs, HKs, Glocks, Walthers, Berettas and from what I have heard CZs and S&W pistols are going to be quite reliable.
I like my Glock from the standpoint of durability, but it is not as accurate as the Walther, HK, and Sig pistols. Not sure about others on accuracy.
Ultimately, You will need to determine what is best for you.
ETA: Walther Article.

Stoeger Cougar. Same internals as a PX4, better all around gun.

CZ's are not as well known in the US, but are considered some of the most consistently accurate hand guns in the world.
