I love Tony's. I was there yesterday, picked out 3 catfish, had them filet the fish. Can't get any fresher. If you observe while there, it can be very entertaining. As far as the location, don't be scared.

Eh, it's a hassle to get over there sometimes but it's a well-lit place with off-duty cops for security.

on a side note, why is this place still in the ghetto?
Because they're making a fortune on our tax dollars.

I'm not from BR. In fact, I've never even been there.
With that said, your customers will eventually stop going out of their way to get to you regardless of the product. I can't tell you how many businesses I watched die here in Birmingham due to the exact same mentality. I watched my cousin kill our family's bakery b/c he was too lazy to move with his customers and stay in the old dying neighborhood. Rent was cheap for a reason!

but as a seafood market in general...Joe Patti's is fantastic...
No one was comparing Tony's to Patti's. But now that you did, Patti's is located right on the friggin Gulf and Tony's is 100 miles inland. That's quite a difference when it comes to seafood if you don't know.

You should've just stopped right there, thought for a second and said you know what, I have nothing to contribute worth a shite on this thread.

I drive there all the time and don't think anything of it and until there is one to compete on the opposite side of town I'll continue to do so.
Many places have tried, Off the Hook, LA Boilers, Tommy's Fish House, City Market. They all suck.
I don't think they all suck/sucked.

I've had Tommy's Fish House several times and it never sucked. Was good every time I tried. I had LA Boilers a few times and it never sucked.
There is not many places in Louisiana that can compete with Tony's on availability or selection. They are the largest seafood market in the state (and one of the largest in the southeast) with cooked foods and raw seafood. It's not going to be easy for anyone to compete with Tony's. They have a big financial backing and it took them a long time to get there.
As far as raw seafood, Restaurant Depot in New Orleans has the best selection and variety out of anyone in the state in my opinion.

Try Montalbano's... although it's a bit of a trek as well.

and where is this backway to sneak in there?
Exit Evangeline, take a left on Longfellow (pretty sure that's the name, it's the only left turn before Plank though) and then take a right before the post office and it takes you right to the side parking lot.

Tony's has owned that building for years. No rent. They also have their Louisiana Fish Fry Products plant right behind the store
They will not move. It is possible they might one day open a smaller fish market/commissary in SE BR, but they will not close down the main location.

i will also add that most of their employees live in the area and walk or ride bikes to work.
tony's is a money making machine in NBR.

It would make more sense to me for Tony's to build something in Lafayette or New Orleans instead of South Baton Rouge. Like others have said, they have their Louisiana Fish Fry plant there(actually they just built a new LFF office building) and their business is killer where it is at. And they have a clientele in North Baton Rouge that will eat seafood 5-7 days a week where they are located.

having a huge chunk of your labor force living in the area also helps a ton

Most of you people fail to realize a big factor in opening a market in SBR. The reason seafood places fail in SBR is because middle class white people eat raw seafood seasonally. Lent and a little past that. Crabs have not been plentiful enough in the last few years to support a poor crawfish season unless you ship them out of state. So Crawfish is your main driver, other seafood are only a small portion an this areas market sales.
I have several relatives in the business and all of them will tell you a market won't make it if all you have is people who just buy around Easter. Especially figuring the costs to operate in SBR.
So I believe there may be no real customer base for a market in SBR that doesn't take much to be saturated.

You are not correct about Tony's. I remember going there back in the 70s. It was the same neighborhood back then, and just as out of the way as it is now. The lines were just as long back then, and the parking lot was worse than it is now. I go to Tony's everytime I'm in Baton Rouge. I always buy stuff to bring home and usually have at least one meal from there. Really, the only time the parking and lines are out of control is during crawfish season. Other times, it's managable, but still worth the trip.
