Tommy Casanova and it is not even close. If the person you declare the best is not in the College Football Hall of Fame, it is hard to make a case that they were the best.

for DT, I think Kyle Williams should at least be in this conversation. IMO, he will have a much better NFL career than McFarland and is currently playing better than Dorsey. At LSU, he may be one of the best run stoppers of all-time.

I get the pure stats argument for him, but Wendell Davis was unreal in some of the things he could do. If I was fielding a team and had to pick one of those two as WR, I'd be hard pressed to say the "consensus" pick between them would be Reed.

They were very different types of receivers, and Davis could do a lot Reed couldn't, and vice versa, of course.

He had the best single season (and single game) as a receiver at LSU, no question. However, I would dispute "best ever" at the position. Eric Martin, Eddie Kennison, Michael Clayton and Dwayne Bowe all have an argument - I might suggest both ET and Clayton as better (overall) than Reed.

ETA: Thanks to YA for reminding me of Wendell Davis

TO CLARIFY:

DT Winner-Dorsey...Lavalais and Booger cancel eachother out.

FB Winner-Taylor...Banks and QJ cancel eachother out.

Agreed?

Yeah.

It is a little close - Laron Landry. But not close enough to make Casanova "disputed". Casanova is probably in the conversation of "best football player" in LSU history, along with Cannon, Faulk, Peterson and *maybe* Stovall.

I'm sure you could get a concensus at RB. I know Faulk re-wrote the record book, and I love that guy, but:

Billy Cannon is the greatest LSU Football player of all time. LSU has never had a player other than Cannon that was considered the best player in nation. How more "concensus" can you get than the Heisman?

Also, Reed is the top LSU WR. He owns the record book.

Many people forget, he was a Heisman runner up.

I think FB is not a consensus. The OP was looking for consensus best, and not necessarily looking to fill out an entire team.

If you include Taylor at FB, you also have to include Hester, and there's no way you'll convince some people that anyone is better or more versatile than Hester.

Not consensus because of Tommy Cassanova.

I toss his name out in the "best ever" discussions to remind people of: Heisman contender (certainly the closest outside of Cannon), he played both ways, returned kicks, punted, as well as being the starting RB.

There is zero chance...ZERO...that you will get a concensus on RB or QB.

That one is certainly debatable. I say this having grown up idolizing Tommy Hodson, Wendell Davis, Dalton Hilliard, and any other Tiger star from the mid to late 80s.

Casanova was the only three time All-American in school history and this was in the day when freshman were not allowed to play or it may have been four time All-American. S.I. put him on the cover and called him the best football player in America...name one other LSU player in any sport with that distinction.

After the latest round...these are the non-disputes.

FB-Jimmy Taylor
WR-Josh Reed
TE-David Lafleur
G-Alan Faneca

DT-Glenn Dorsey
LB-Michael Brooks
LB-Warren Capone
CB-PP7
S-LaRon Landry
S-Tommy FREAKIN Casanova

Pending Arguments:

T-Andolsek or Whitworth?
RB-Cannon or Faulk
C-Mawae/Albergamo/Wilkerson
K-Browndyke/David

Eliminated from Discussion:

P-Jones/Kessler/Holstein/Parker

*I'd think if you named 4 guys there won't be a concensus.

Reminder: Every position will NOT have a concensus best. If we disagree, that's cool. I was just wondering if there was ANYBODY else that is as non-disputed as Faneca, Casanova, Brooks.

Chad Kessler holds the NCAA record for punting average for a single season (50.3 yds). So, I'd say that it's at least debatable.

Yes this guy had a huge leg, but he couldn't pouch for shite. It seems like he kicked it through the endzone every time he was anywhere near the opponents endzone.
