I still think there are too many other great ones to consider him "consensus." I understand the point about the stats. Davis, Martin, even Dwayne Bowe and Michael Clayton. Those guys were all great.

RB-Cannon or Faulk

Or Stovall or Hilliard.

Oh yeah.

Also, who would be in the QB discussion?

Hodson, Russell, Jones, Tittle ... anyone else on the first tier of QBs?

Is Dalton Hilliard really not even in this discussion?

And I didn't mean to make an argument to denigrate Casanova - purely as a safety, Laron Landry was outstanding. Casanova ran the ball, returned kicks and punts, and played everywhere in the secondary. Probably the best all-around football player in LSU history, and the consensus best safety (but there are some close calls, as evidenced by this discussion).

Admittedly I haven't read this entire thread but didn't LSU have a punter who averaged more than 50 yards for the season? Seems to me he would be the unquestioned best at his position.

Not consensus because of Tommy Cassanova.

There are 2 safety positions. If we are only going for 1 best safety, I would agree with Cassanova.

No, not really. Charles Alexander would probably rank higher (maybe the best pure runner in LSU history). Cannon, Faulk and probably Stovall are all in another tier.

I say this with Dalton being one of my very favorite players in history.

Didn't someone else do the pooch punting for Kessler, which is one reason he was able to maintain the huge average? I did a ton of drugs during that period, so I may be remembering wrong.

that's an athlete when you can do all that Like I mentioned in my earlier post, and Casanova and Peterson both were athletes besides football players. Laron specialized in hits, his coverage skills were terrible!

OK, for everybody who wanted to start throwing out RB and WR names...

I initially wanted to keep these positions out of the discussion, and I went through all the guys you're now naming as my reason why...but at some point, some posters wanted to open back up the discussion on those.

My stance is the same...too many great ones to name a concensus.

Apologies to Josh Reed, Billy Cannon and Kevin Faulk

Colt David was surpassed Jasper imo!

Now Colt David will go down in history with one of LSU's greatest plays ever! You got a argument there!

I'd say Jasper, no comparison.

ETA: In fact, Jasper is the only one at his position that I can say is the clear cut best ever.

I agree and LSU has had a ton of DTs and DEs that make this difficult, too. QB is an interesting discussion, and it's been done to death, but I don't think there's a clear consensus. You've probably got the only 3 clear ones, and got them early, G - Faneca, LB - Brooks and S - Casanova.

I also would strongly dispute the David Lafleur pick at TE. I recall that he had these amazing measurables, but never really made any plays. He dropped a lot of balls and had fumbling problems. He was never really an impact player at LSU, imho.

Ok well, fine but statistically that is not very fair.
