The problem with Hollywood and science fiction is that few really take it seriously in Hollywood.
They know that they can make serious MONEY off of it.
So they feel like they don't need to make serious ART out of it.
I'll give you an analogy. Why create gourmet hot dogs at $4.50 instead of cheap ones at $2.00 if the price for both is going to be $5.00?
People are going to eat hot dogs regardless.
I think that's how they see it.
Hollywood is great at SELLING Sci Fi. They don't care how it's made, as long as it's cheap.
If it tastes good to the masses, bonus.
If it doesn't? Who the frick cares, right? Sci Fi movies don't win Academy Awards outside of effects anyhow.
That's what frustrates fans who want well-made, thoughtful, original and interesting science fiction.

It was basically Skyline
Never ever bring that movie up in regards to Battle Los Angeles. That movie was literally the worst sci-fi/action/alien movie since Battlefield:Earth.

I didn't mean that it was bad.
I was referring more to the angle of centering on a small group rather than the conflict at large, or at least very high up on the commanding ladder as far as the group followed.
Chill.

Independence Day set the standard for alien blockbuster movies.
You are probably right, but god I thought it was horrible the first couple of times I watched it. It's grown on me over the years though. But there are still so many scenes that make me cringe.
Is b:la a first person movie? I read on here that it was like watching a video game and my brother just said he thought it was filmed as a first person shooter. Like cloverfield. Any truth to that? If so I might wait to see it. Thoughs movies bug the shite out of me.

No substanstive (if any) first person elements ala cloverfield
The "video game aspect" is from the fact that the modern military platoon setting/jargon can be reminiscent of games like MW2
It's not a big enough deal for all the people bringing it up. And I don't know why it's negative anyway.
Hell, a big budget movie sequence of the massive Russian invasion of the DC area would be epic.
I don't mind getting nothing but good action and special effects out of a movie...

Just got back from seeing it. Good action flix. Does not set a bar but is not bad. The only annoying character was the mexican chick.

I actually loved the way that Cloverfield was shot, but it seems that people either love it or hate it ... i liked it because it made you feel closer to what was going on in the movie ... especially when they were running next to the national guard with the bazookas ... not to mention that the guy with the camera was a total deuche and had me laughing the entire movie

It's ok. The title says what it is. A battle in LA. Expect to forget it as soon as you walk out. Was entertaining though.

I've learned to trust Rotten Tomatoes for ratings on Toy Story, and that is it. The movie was a typical sci-fi action movie that packed the "what if" scenario. It's always fun to imagine what an alien invasion would look like, and I think this is accurate. I doubt we would simply get steamrolled like in most movies. As always, there are flaws, and the acting wasn't the best. It was nice to see familiar sites like the I-10 west signs and buildings. It's definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Would have done better as a 3 hour movie IMO.
