Port of Call, last time I was there I saw a hole in the wall with a mouse in it.
Seriously, does Adolpho's count, upstairs above a bar, pretty low key, low prices.

Definitely a hole in the wall, I suppose. But best? Only in a dire emergency trying to make it home without a DUI.
Igor's does some pretty good, basic dishes. I post up at the Avenue Plaza every Mardi Gras season and it gets me thru the weekend.
"Best" and "Hole in the wall" is kind of contradicting, anyway.

I have picked up lunch on the second floor of Halpern's on Prytania on several occasions. Had no idea it was up there.

The Joint was really good (bbq)
There was also some really good breakfast place on Magazine Street but I cannot think of the name at the moment.

Does this qualify as a hole in the wall? I would think it's too nice for that distinction.
To me, "a hole in the wall" is also defined by the fact that the physical qualities of the restaurant would make you think that the food is not as good as it turns out to be.
Irene's is more like a classic romantic Italian neighborhood restaurant. Places in the French Quarter, with their old and historic buildings, almost don't fit in the traditional definition of "hole in the wall". They'd have to be REALLY DUMPY to be FQ holes in the wall!

i don't call irene's a hole in the wall, either, but i agree w/ the poster: it's my favorite restaurant.

Come on. It isn't that difficult.
Yet here you are mentioning Mikimoto which is a pretty visible place on Carrolton.

That's because it used to be a schitthole. They used to have fish names printed on white paper and hung on the wall to signify that if you ordered in the sushi was $1.00 a piece. They could have just put $1 a pice on a sign, but I guess the paper taped to the wall was more eye catching.
