I'm looking at a truck that has an asking price of $20,000. I currently have $15,000 cash that I want to use as a down payment and a trade-in worth approximately $4000-4500. Any chance they would cut me a deal and do an even swap to include TTL?

ETA: I'm starting med school soon and I don't want to have a monthly payment as I will not have an income

I would expect a nice discount to pay in full upfront.

Yes. You should have some cash in pocket when you walk away.

Or, buy a cheaper truck and have cash in pocket.

Do not finance anything in your situation.

Sell your trade-in outright, get them to do an in/out (They do the paperwork just like a trade-in). Some will charge, I sold a Toyota truck and a CR-V, done an in/out, got my Mom a new CR-V for around $350.

Don't deal w/ a car dealer! you can probably find the same quality truck for the cash you have in hand on craigslist. also easy to sell your vehicle on craigslist. and you walk away w/ $4000 in pocket. I recently bought a nissan frontier off craigslist for $16000 and the same used truck at most dealerships was listed for $20-21K. dealers love for you to come in w/ potential trade-in, that's where they can really make some dough.

It's a 2001 Tacoma with 190,000 miles on it. I would be moving to Ohio with a truck that doesn't even have a working defrost. Tacomas retain their value well and this truck has other problems so I wouldn't be comfortable selling it to someone outright. It's not going to last 8 more years. So frankly while I would love to keep it, it's just not an option at this point.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest

That's my entire point. That dealer knows that's not worth $4500 so they will shift cost around to make you think you are getting a good deal. They know what the bottom line is and can add or subtract price on either vehicle depending on your main priority. God help someone who goes in with a vehicle that is underwater!

There is a reason that car dealers rank at the top of the untrustworthy list every year. If you are not in a hurry then look for a private sell vehicle.

buy private vehicle + private sell your vehicle

>>>>>>>>> (money in your pocket)

dealer sell you vehicle + dealer buy your vehicle

FWIW I got $5500 on my 1999 Tacoma 140k miles a few months ago. Sell it on craigslist. Very easy. I sold it the same day...cash.

I would sell the tacoma- take that money and add about 5-7k of your cash buy another used truck. You can get a solid used truck for the 12k range. Have some nice cash saved up when you are in school. Assuming you are on loans, all the money you spend is going to have 6.8 percent interest on top.
