Roasted leg of lamb with applesauce and roasted root vegetables.

Stewed chicken with milk gravy and mashed potatos with a ton of butter and real cream and lots of black pepper.

Fried chicken with the above.

Standing rib roast with yorkshire pudding.

Beef stroganoff and lasagna.

All of the above are my mothers but I have taken over them now since she is too old to cook or just won't because it is only two eating.

I'm a sauce or creamy dish person, myself.

Soup is my all time comfort food. I love soup. I could eat soup every day. I'm about to have creamy shrimp bisque for "supper". I like that word. It's a comfort word.

Anything my parents made when we were little. It's not about the taste. It's about the memories.

My Mom's vegetable soup and her roast and rice and gravy come to mind, immediately. She still makes it so I get to go back in time, but in the present.

I like it too and use it. And the memories of the family supper are fond as well. Seven of us sitting at the table with placemats and cloth napkins, water glasses and milk or ice tea. No cold drinks. My younger brother and I on opposite corners because we are both left handed. Phone off the hook, TV turned off, door locked and if someone knocked they were told we were eating come back later. We ate dinner everynight at 7 pm sharp.

Those memories are as comforting as my mothers cooking as well.

We weren't as regulated as you were. We didn't get to take calls during supper, but the phone was on the hook and answered. Messages were taken, but my parents were not going to miss a call from the grandparents in case something was wrong. I can't remember watching TV unless something special was on and we were allowed to eat on TV tables, but that was rare.

When we got older, with the boys playing sports, we didn't eat all together. We went to the games or those at home ate together and the others ate when they got home. I liked all the activity and coming and going. We all had breakfast together, though, before school. If I knew then, what I know now I would have appreciated things a lot more.

My mom's pressure cooker beef stew.

Very simple. Meat, onions, potatoes, carrots, salt & pepper. Flour to thicken. Served over rice.

She's making some tonight!

boudin

I miss this. ALOT! I get about 20 pounds whenever we go visit my folks.

But I find that some of the recipes that are being used in louisiana aren't as good anymore. I don't know if it's the younger generations not putting "love" into the boudin making or what.
