another question, is the french dip a generational type sandwich? seems like they used to be more common, or am i imagining that?

Maybe you just eat less at restaurants that have them
Quiznos has one although it's not very good IMO

I do recall them being somewhat "trendy" about 20 years ago or so, at least in La.
I remember Coffee Call in BR used to serve lunch (do they still?) and had a really good one.

I had dempseys last week and wasn't impressed. Wish iwould have ordered something else. The chicken and andouille gumbo on the other hand was really tasty with nice flavors.

Dempsey's uses thick brown gravy as their au jus which is not what I like. George's makes a damn good one 3/4ths of the time, and the one at Jay's BBQ is pretty good.

Brew Bachers used to have a pretty decent one.

Houston's
If that's the same business that was on St Charles, their french dip is the best one I've ever had. It was $14 or so, but real damn good.

It's all about what you like.
I've love the au jus at Dempsey's, so it's my favorite French Dip.
I've tried the one at Jay's and wasn't impressed at all, but that's probably cause it has a more traditional au jus. To tell you the truth I really wasn't impressed with anything at Jay's when I ate there.

Absolutely it's about what a person likes. I'm probably in the minority on menu items & restaurants that I like & dislike as compared to what most other posters on here think.
I've always liked not all, but most things on the Jay's BBQ menu, and lots of posters don't.
I've had the fried seafoods at Tommy's Fish House & Off The Hook, and IMO they're not even in the same ballpark as Dempsey's...But my biggest difference with others on here seems to be Mason's Grill..I will never understand the love for the food (other than breakfast) at Mason's.

I know I will get blasted here, but I love the french dip and even better the roast beef po boy at Bears.
I am about to drool just thinking about it.

i totally agree in general, as most are aware.
Just don't like the bread at all for a roast beef po-boy....not enough character to hold up to the meat and gravy/au jus.
