I've only had Whataburger twice, but impressed that it tasted more "fresh" than a Wendy's, Mcdonald's or Burger King burger.
well i hope so. that's like winning gold in the special olympics.

there are actual reasons why product popularity comes to be.
and sometimes it's b/c of fond memories, it's all you really know, familiarity, nostalgia, hometown allegiance, etc that will make you think more highly of something than you would otherwise.
It happens in all walks of life, not just food.

Well we are talking about fast food hamburgers.. So we are basically talking about the culinary equivalent of such.

My point is, people of the 70's and 80's didn't care that Bud's was local and McDonalds/BK/Ect wasn't. Bud's was the best quick hamburger in NO then. I don't think anyone would ever suggest Bud's was ever better than a good quick hamburger.
To suggest that something became popular only out of some blind allegiance, during a time when one wasn't around to experience it, is embracing ignorance, IMO.

but i can taste it now, and Bud's is gross.
eta: and of course, i don't buy for one second the fact that was a local product, or that people just didn't have know any better, played zero part in people's allegiance. Hell, i fell victim to the same thing with Fleur De Lis, but i can admit this fact. It's nice pizza, but clearly not as good as i thought it was at the time.

I've had both bad and good post katrina at various Bud's. Very inconsistent at best. I think even their suppliers are inconsistent, I try one once a year or so and the meat consistency/patty size seems all over the board.
Back in the day it was a much more consistent experience. (In a good way.)

legit question, that i have thought about before.
how many of our fond food memories would still taste great today if you were to try it for the first time?
In some respects food has gotten worse by being over processed. But at the same time, some aspects of cuisine have greatly improved due to a growing "foodie" culture, health issues, quality control, etc.

48 votes for included restaurants, Whataburger still in the lead with Sonic trailing. I always thought people liked Sonic for the Coney dogs and tots.
