I'm done now, and will stop editing my list. This is pretty challenging. A Sci-Fi list all by itself would've been hard enough, but to add comedy on top of it, made it very tricky. I realized last night how the sci-fi genre is just getting broader and broader. I put in Clash of the Titans because, well Harryhausen just needed to be on the list. Then I jumped to Conan the Barbarian and well, my list just exploded.
Personally, I think Science Fiction lists should be limited to topics strictly dealing with at least three of the following as main characters or settings (or in some way a major part of the plot): space, aliens, time travel/parallel worlds, the future, technology, androids, or superhuman abilities. However, we left the door wide open for much more to come in and, well...they did. Eternal Sunshine is not a Science Fiction movie (it is an awesome movie though).
My judging was based on overall movie production quality, lasting impact, timelessness, best representation of a particular genre/director/actor, and in some cases just plain nerdiness. It would be pretty easy to skew the results of the list to put at the top of my lists movies that I know I like, and want to see on the top 100, however, they may not be chosen by anyone else. Yet, I tried not to do that, and assumed that we were really getting a representative grouping; however, we aren't.
All that being said...Freauxen thanks for all the effort you're putting into doing this. If nothing else, I had fun making my lists.
I would also, like to suggest a future list(s):
Horror
Fantasy
It would also be an interesting, yet lame/boring/almost gay thing to do to see what everyone would choose if they had to make a list on the best period piece/dramatic/chick flick type of films out there.
Prison movies might also be a good subject.

I suppose you would put, Naked Gun, Major League, There's Something About Mary, and Billy Madison ahead of these. I wouldn't. Comedy is so subjective its very difficult to make a list. I didn't dog your list, so shut up.
When Nature Calls is top ten funny to me, it might be some of the just pure funniest material on the list, IMO:
Fulton Greenwall: My name is Fulton Greenwall, and I am looking for an Ace Ventura.
Ashram Monk: No man here carries with him a label.
Fulton Greenwall: Oh yes, no names. How silly of me. Well, um, he's an American.
Ashram Monk: We are all children of the same life force.
Fulton Greenwall: Yes of course we are.
[thinks]
Fulton Greenwall: He bends over and speaks from his rear.
Ashram Monk: Oh him. Right this way...
(Genius!)
Ace: Excuse me, your balls are showing.
(funniest line ever possibly!)
I mean, he crawls out of a Rhino's butt, he does a slinky down a rediculously long stair and it stops at the last step, cliffhanger jokes, totem pole, it just doesn't stop, monopoly guy....on and on.
I tried to judge overall best movie's and lasting impact (in general) over just funniest. However, your list did remind me of Happy Gilmore, which is hard for me to believe you'd put Billy Madison in front of that one.
Tommy Boy, Joe Dirt, Airplane, Dumb and Dumber, Step Brothers, Small Time Crooks, The Toy, etc...all very very funny movies. But Mars Attacks is epic and I love it.
Ack Ack!

I will start counting tonight.
I think we may have a problem even reaching 50 movies this time.

you could keep the voting open a bit longer, that is of course up to you.
I notice we are missing some regulars that voted and wrote last time. I think some peopel don't check here that often.

With the comedies... yes
Maybe you should extend it to us listing 20
I could come up with 10 more
It seems like everyones top 10 are almost identical but I think youd start to see a lot of differentiatlity in the 10-20 range

Possible, I'm in no rush. But I also think my wait to do the thread also affected amount of voters.

Yup.

Actually a solid idea. But everyone who voted would have to go back and change/add. Wouldn't do it otherwise.
Anyone else interested in increasing counts to 20?

Im in, just let me know. But do you think 20 will be enough still Or should it go to 25? Dont want you to work too hard on it.

Na, 20 is good.
quote:

It's not really all that bad once you get the first 10 or so sheets in. Once that happens most of your big movies are entered, and it's all about adding votes and points.
Heck, last year it was 20 movies and 73 total ballots. We have a lot less this time.
Posted on 11/16/09 at 2:32 pm to Freauxzen
So you want us to go back and edit our original lists or just repost them from here on out

Yeah I can extend my list too. It's probably not a bad idea cause then movies that didn't get attention on the first list can get some notice.
