Woodford Reserve Bourbon is freaking awesome. It's full, robust and the palate is complex with citrus notes, spice, and floral tastes. But it also happens to be balanced and round. It has a nice long finish with a smooth spice. And it would pair greatly with the herbal bitters and sweet sugar in an Old Fashioned cocktail.
-- Oh, and enjoy.

I don't like crown, but that's going in the right direction. Because rye whiskey is the way to go here (crown includes rye but is not a "rye whiskey"--sometimes canadia whiskey is called that which brings out confusion).
Old Overholt or Sazerac Rye are the more popular ones. They go better with Manhattans as well than Bourbon does because they are less sweet. I think in many cocktails that add sugar, they are better than bourbon. And I like bourbon. Perfectly acceptable in those drinks, but try them out with rye.

Rye is the correct answer. Things like bourbon and definitely Crown are too sweet on their own to stand up to the sugary additions to the drink.
Clancys makes a great one. He uses rye.
