Does this season cause a drastic shift in how Jay approaches team building?

He made some pretty pointed comments about how he did a poor job in assembling his team a couple of years ago after they won a title and then had a bit of a down year.
This team is infinitely worse than that team.
He assembled this year on paper a highly talented team full of portal additions. And it failed miserably.
How do you think Jay approaches this and future offseasons?
More emphasis on HS recruiting and development? Going after guys that are better defensively, have a true position, rather than just looking to try and find offense?
How do you think he approaches getting pitchers in the building?

I'm of the belief that NIL is killing programs.
Unproven kids want tons of $$ and immediate playing time right now instead of learning.

The thing is, this wasn't just CJJ who misevaluated that talent. Everyone did. Most, if not all, of the major recruiting outlets had him ranked top 3 in their transfer rankings. He just didn't translate to the SEC. It happens, and this year he will have more time to evaluate individuals without going deep (or even at all) into the postseason.

I think all of college baseball is watching svd is about to shift

If he averages 2 championships every 5 years then I don't think he has to 'drastically' change his approach. Lessons to be learned from this year, absolutely, but to say drastic changes may be blowing it out of proportion.

Recruiting aside, what the hell have they been doing at practice? What’s the locker room like?
They can’t do simple things like throw to first or catch breaking ball behind the plate.

That level of performance is unsustainable. The odds are JJ has won his last championship vs us getting 2 of the next 5.
And yes, the results this year mandate changes or he’s on the chopping block next year with a repeat performance.

Yes, change is warranted, but categorizing it as drastic is a bit of a stretch. I don't believe he has to redefine the wheel here based on his track record.

Of all the shite-posters, you are probably the worst. You keep repeating your dumb takes like they matter.

When you have THIS bad of a year with the alleged amount of talent you have, something went extremely wrong in everything you did, from evaluation to coaching to in game adjustments
So you have to have some self reflection, and Jay I think is good at that

These portal guys seem to have more question marks than previous elite additions.

I think it was a weaker pool of transfers than usual, but I could be super wrong. Other years seem to be more top heavy. I think you still have to find elite editions like Anthony Eyanson, Gage Jump, and Tommy White.
I think Jay just doesn’t want to lose some of the highly talented guys after one season or two. I think you still try to find elite additions in the portal.

I think he takes a big step back in portal acquisitions...contrary to what the sky-screamers in other threads think...him and Yeskie can develop kids. I think they changed a lot of coaching from previous years assuming these kids had the talent and understanding that they didn't need to focus on development so much. I think with NIL, he will focus more on high level HS kids that are coming in and getting them to stay for a few years at LSU.
I think Tanks and Skenes might have spoiled him and us for a bit because we all thought this was normal-ish...hitting on transfers.
I think he gets back into his West Coast baseball roots as well and stops looking for kids with HR totals and more OBP.
I don't think Pitching philosphy and recruiting changes...we always look for hard throwing, strike throwers....I think some of these trasnfer pitchers again didn't pan out.
I also think this team has straight up given up on the season. I can see how a bunch of high self-value, NIL queens would give up after knowing this is not a deep postseason team.

quote:in theory, he'd probably like to rely on guys he recruits, develops and watches improve over 3 years and supplement that with very few transfers. In reality, not many guys are gonna stick around for 2 seasons without being a starter. So relying on recruits will continue to be harder than ever.
How do you think he approaches getting pitchers in the building?
If you were guaranteed to keep every freshman you have for 3 seasons, I think Jay would build that way. But it just isn't gonna happen. He missed on transfers for the first time since he's been here.
It'll be fine and hopefully he doesn't miss this bad again.

quote:I see zero evidence of this. This team was 3 pitches away from winning a road series against a top 15 team without their 2 best starting pitchers, most senior leading hitter, plus a few other injuries.

They did the opposite of quit.

I always think the mentality behind building a roster is to rely on development out of high school, and them supplement through the portal. Obviously, there are some exceptions when guys like Tommy White, Paul Skenes, Jacob Berry, etc. enter the portal you go out and get em regardless.
This season was sort of a perfect storm of bad luck. Your pitching staff is not what you thought, Moore injury, portal additions didn't live up to the hype, Brown done for season, and a lot of failure in the development department as well.

quote:I wonder how much of this was media trust in CJJ his prior talent eval successes and historical results. "If good enough for CJJ good enough for us" mentality. They may be a bit more critical going forward after this season.

I think numbers played a part in that, though players like Yorke and Carraway were well regarded. We were simply late in the portal and had a ton of players to replace.

I thought it was obvious the last few weeks what his approach is. Develop as many freshmen recruits as possible and hopefully you have less portal guys to fill gaps.
