The conventional wisdom that the population needs to grow forever

In my limited experience with current ‘rudimentary’ AI it seems clear to me that it will replace people in many sectors of the economy.
Watching war video I think drones can (will?) one day do much of our fighting for us.
So why the steady drumbeat about population growth? Maybe to ensure there is always a growing pool of consumers?
Perhaps what is happening with slowing growth as tech advances is the natural order of things. We already saw that with farming families.
How many people should live in Alabama? 100 million?

We live in a society constructed for younger people to fund the safety net for older people. As younger people decline in population the less ability there is to care for those above the retirement age. We will import people to manage the gap and destroy our culture.
To answer your question, we could fit the entire population of the world into Texas at the population density of New York. We have space for many more people

Sure you can fit people in. But you can't do any farming with the population density of New York.

Which doesn’t make sense because they are a net drain $ wise

The world would be a much better place with a significantly lower population.

Boy, you really missed the point, didn’t you?

Population growth is more than just "conventional wisdom". Success of the species is engrained in all living things. Hard to fight nature.

Food hygiene of South Asia is sure trying hard though.

Same with Africa.
Amazing that the places with the very worst food and sanitation produces the largest population booms. As if looming death makes people want to spread the seed even more.

Asian rape gangs in the UK and EU aren't in fear of looming death. Perhaps there is another factor

I'm in the Malthusian camp here. People will say things like "you can fit the earth's population in Texas." But, the main issue is feeding everyone, not to mention running the global economy. We can feed 8 million people because of fertilizers and pesticides, as well as mechanized equipment. When the fossil fuels go into decline, mother nature will take care of itself. You're probably going to get a glimpse of what's coming later this summer from the slowdown of energy and fertilizer leaving the middle east.
Everyone is obsessed with growth because our economic system assumes it. But, we live on a finite planet. Something has to give.

Theoretically you could farm enough protein and introduce vertical farming, but that would require 100x the energy needs of pumping water, lighting, heating, cooling, converting spaces, etc.
Theoretically that is.

I don’t want any more fricking people. Traffic is already horrible. The problem right now is that only the stupid people are breeding.

Sure you can take a cross country road trip with 6 people in a Honda Fit, but why would you do that to yourself?

The only way bankers, govts and corporations grow and get more money is if there is inflation and constant growth.

I believe it’s been shown that species with a low infant survival rate naturally produce more offspring.
