Saints GM Mickey Loomis said the current state of the team's rebuild won't change his general draft-trade philosophy. (They've always believed in the value of moving up.)
But he did insist "We're not one player away" right now like they often were in Drew Brees era.

Probably a crock of shite per the usual from Mickey. But assuming this to be true, I would think this points towards Tate if he's available. No real risks to speak of. No issues with injury, size, etc.

Sounds like the opposite. They want the player with the fewest question marks so they are staying put

So Delane and Downs maybe Tate

Screams Downs, Delane, or Tate to me

Delane fits that bill of a safe pick and less questions.
Tate - speed issues, limited upside
Tyson - injury concerns
Bain - measurable and fit
McCoy - injury concerns

Giants are taking Downs at 5.

Downs or Delane are the least amount of questions.
The only question on Downs is that do you pick a Safety that high

I don’t doubt Delane will be a good player
But will he be an elite player? I just don’t think he will. I also don’t think, at this very moment, he’s enough of an improvement in the secondary to make them a better team. It also raises more question marks on who will go into the slot. Riley and Kool Aid are capable but I’m just not a fan of switching guys positions when they weren’t that bad

I don't get that, taking your assumptions, I'd say Delane would be his target. Mickey values certain players high, Shut down CB is one of them. Big men are the other. He's not targeting Oline at 8 and aside form one of the top edges falling no other D-lineman warrants a top 8 pick.
Tate is good but he's Chris Olave, bascially. Moore has already said in regards to the WR room he likes to have varying bodies and styles available. ( I surmise they are looking for a replacement of Shaheed's role)

Some seem to think our first WR picked will be our last. I see two drafted and 1-3 UDFAs before camp.

I love how he put (They've always believed in the value of moving up) when Mickeys words and the next paragraph scream "we probably trade down".
Risk adverse + little doubt + "not one player away" says we pick BPA or trade back for a similar rated guy with a less risky pick.
None of that reads like we are trading up.
Its also a purposely confusing statement. What does "risk" and "little doubt" mean? In regards to measurement? Injury history? Floor? Ceiling? How are they actually measuring risk and doubt?

Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree with you that it could very well be Delane as well. He seems to be a very safe pick. Some question if he will be a true shut down corner - e.g. Surtain, Stingley to merit a #8 pick but I don't see any glaring weaknesses in his game.
I do think that Tate is physically bigger than Olave and can win contested catches better and that Olave is more of a speedster, so I don't know that I agree that they are the same player. But Tate certainly isn't a huge 6'4"/6'5" guy either, if that's what Loomis is looking for.

Draft JT and you are not risk averse. So if he is not lying, then JT is not the play at 8.

Yes you do if he is a generational talent. Downs appears to be that

I’d rather Downs over Delane. I don’t see Delane moving the needle as much on the defense vs a safety tailor made for Staley’s defensive scheme.

Not from anyone that watch's him. The dude shut down half the field on a LSU team that had zero pass rush.

They have that in Vale. What they lack is a guy that can threaten to take the top off the defense and also turn short passes into house runs. Only guy that seems to fit that bill is Lemon, but IMO you don't take him at 8. There are however several guys that will be available in the 2nd and 3rd that can be that guy. IMO Mickey (and for the most part Moore) are guys that feel like you don't want to be picking in the top 10 a lot so when you have to you want to hit homeruns. I don't see Tate or really any of these WR's as Top 8 homeruns.
But who really knows how the Saints brass or any teams brass ranks these players. One thing for sure is it's rarely like fans rank them. Which is why every year there are players that the fans a left scratching their heads about rising or falling.
