How do you end up with guys like Ethan Frey and Jared Jones

You stick with them and develop them, Jay pretty much told that whole freshman class last year to get bent. Mikey Ryan would be our 2nd best hitter right now and Ryan Costello would have a spot somewhere. Look, it’s great when you hit in the portal, but you cannot mess with your organic development of players. He may have put us back a couple of years by letting a lot of that class go last year

Thanks for yesterdays recap directly from the head coach

Haha. This is the rants favorite thing to do. Act like they came up with shite. Well I been saying it since last season!!

He admitted the draft last year caught him by surprise. He realized the mistakes and is planning to correct them. It's nice to have a coach who's adaptable. We were always going to have to go hard in the portal next year anyway for OF and MIF

1) Jay Johnson screwed up this year
2) He acknowledged that he screwed up
3) I am 100% confident he has learned from this screw up
4) I am also confident he knows how to fix it and will fix it
Let’s get through this season and watch what JJ does when he gets an early head start in the portal and recruiting high school. Recruiting the portal wasn’t the problem because you should always fill holes out of the portal. The problem is, you should never put the portal over high school kids unless there are issues with those kids developmentally or with their attitude. The core of the team should always be made of program guys because that’s where the leadership should come from. Nobody hates this more than JJ because while everyone is playing in the post season, he will not be. That will eat him up, humble him and drive him to correct the course of this ship.

Are we looking to fill spots with guys that are hitting below .150 in their conference?

Mikey Ryan has 7 errors, that would lead this LSU team. Costello has 4 errors and is hitting .286 I believe.
If you’re gonna bitch about transfers, there are better options.

quote:is there though? I feel like each transfer from last season all have serious flaws. Costello numbers are impressive until you see his big 10 numbers and like you stated the fielding. Ryan would have a spot in this line up as a hitter but he’s struggled with fielding and would be the worst fielder on this team as hard as that is to imagine. Larson numbers are inflated because he’s just a platoon player just like he was here and has half less AB’s than the majority of Texas regular starters. I really don’t see a guy that left that’s actually helping this team improve this year.

Larson is a better guy if you’re going to lament a transfer and I don’t think he makes a dent this year now that Braun is doing so well at first base.

We were not going to win now keeping those guys, but we might have won next year Mario those guys.
JJ thought we could win now with the portal guys.
Huge risk that did not pay off, and now, we have a choice.
Going back to that model you speak of at this point means we won’t win in 27 but can in 28
Going portal means we might ior migbt not win in 27, and we are going to have the same problem every year.

There’s also the mentality that “play me daily or I bolt”
Posted on 4/19/26 at 11:04 am to LoneWolf
honestly I think we had a lot of issues
guys leaving jay didn’t want to leave
we were behind th 8 ball recruiting because of the Champio ship run and got out bossed in a few guys
I dont think Yorke was plan A.

I totally agree with your perspective. And everyone blasting a Championship coach must be ignorant to Coach Berkman's down years and mistakes. My point, no one is perfect, but it takes a bigger man and excellent coach to publicly acknowledge his mistakes and construct the plan to fix it. The world isn't coming to an end.... well, it is but that's for a different thread.

He said it after Friday nights game. It’s on here.

He absolutely has. And who all is gone after this year? Brown, Curiel, Stanfield, Milam, Rizy, etc. If you think the team is “struggling” this year, they are going to be down right brutal next year
Posted on 4/19/26 at 11:41 am to LoneWolf
None of the players that left are good enough to be the best player on a championship team for weeks-months-years like Frey & Jones were, at times.

Not disagreeing with you guys. But let’s not forget that we’re leading the SEC in walks and wild pitches and third in hit batters. Team ERA in conference games is 6.26, third to last. This season is not all on hitters that left. Pitching hasn’t been good and two guys that are “homegrown”, Evans and Schmidt, have not progressed like expected
Posted on 4/19/26 at 12:05 pm to Tigerfan1274
Everyone is so hung up on transfers but Jay also said Schmidt was the key to his life for the next 18 months and uhhhhh that doesn't seem great because that guy is currently average at best going into his junior year and he was supposed to be a high 1st rounder coming out of HS. He hasn't developed at all.
