Mail fraud alert: gift card stolen from mailed birthday card

Well, it happened to us too! And yes, I know it's a crime but it's impossible to catch the criminals.
Family member received birthday card that was supposed to have coffee shop gift card in it.
Envelope was strategically torn to extract the gift card, and we just received the activation receipt for the gift card along with the birthday card.
Unfortunately, there is nothing much we can do. I will be filing a mail fraud form with the PO but I know full well it's a waste of time. And I will wish nasty things for the thieves. May they rot in hell!
Another reason I won't be sad when USPS bites the dust.

Locally, the demand for mail carriers is up there with the demand for substitute teachers. You’re not getting high character individuals in most cases.

If you use Amazon- you can buy a gift card and it texts or emails the recipient with the info to I guess “redeem” it. It charges your credit card the same way as if you bought something. They redeem the amount you sent and it’s like a credit they can spend.
You can Apple Cash too and some other stuff but I don’t know how that works, I’ve only e-sent the Amazon gift cards.

I would have said this was an exaggeration a few years ago, but 3 of the last 4 gift cards my family sent me have been stolen.

We have had a lot of them stolen too. You know what has stopped it? Sending them in a padded envelope or a larger envelope with a type of thick card stock in it with the card envelope in between. They look for the obvious card envelopes and single those out.
If they go through Memphis sorting, they are almost guaranteed to get stolen. We have had cards in the past with no gift cards inside not get delivered at a high rate. Obviously because they ripped them open looking for gift cards and then discarded them,

“They” strategically ripped open a card a friend sent me once that contained a cross-stitched bookmark. Needless to say, I got the card but no bookmark.

I do the same thing... $50 Starbucks cards to family and friends. I never cared about a response but this year I'll call and make sure they got it because I don't trust the post office. They make too many mistakes these days. What has changed? Not sure, but when I was young 90% of the employees I encountered were male. Now it's 90% female.

Our new mail lady is the size of Jaba the Hut and takes 10 minutes to walk 50 ft. To deliver packages.
