Just here to complain about movie ticket prices

I assume this is a tired topic, but I don't get the chance to take my family to the movies very often. I just got tickets for the matinee today for the new Mario movie.
4 tickets = $80. There's a $10 convenience fee I could avoid if I pay $18 for a year's worth of avoiding convenience fees. Considering we get to the movies once or twice a year, it's barely worth it.
Adding in a few drinks and the candy we're going to smuggle in my wife's purse, that's a $100 outing. To see a 1 hour and 38 minute movie.
I'm sorry but that's not worth it.
In 1996, the average cost of a movie ticket was ~$4.42. In 2012, it was $7.92. In 2026, it's $16.08.

You can't take a shite outside for under $100. It's just not worth it anymore.

It's been out of control for a while now. The last movie the wife and I went to see was the last "Top Gun-Maverick" and between tickets, 2 popcorns and 2 medium sodas, it was over $50.
To me, that's insane.

Always eat at home, but yeah, tix prices are insane. You'll constantly hear about woke this and that, but it’s cost that's killing theaters.

Go on discount days or get AMC A list
You don't have to bring kids to Dolby showings or buy candy at the theater, get it at the gas station

I’ve never seen $20 a ticket. That’s insane. I always catch matinees and never get concessions. The theatres definitely lose money on me

The kicker is the movies are nearly as good as they used to be.

I'm taking my kids to see Mario later today. Tix for Dolby are $22.08

Being as old as I am------73----I can remember when I was a teen and would head downtown to the Saenger, Orpheum, Lowes State or Joy theater and catch new release movies for $1.25 for the ticket and with $2 more I could fill up on popcorn, soda and candy.
Ticket prices at neighborhood movie houses were no more than $.75 for a double feature with cartoons between them.

I pay $20 a month for unlimited movies.

How much would you be willing to pay to watch your favorite baseball or football team play? They are still the same form of entertainment except one is for sports and the other is for movies
For example, no problem spending $100 for a 3 hour baseball game experience plus parking, plus food and drinks but complain about paying cheaper prices for a 3 hour movie experience.
Makes total sense

Thats where they frick you... Took my kid to see a few movies over the last few years. Honestly, the ticket price wasn't bad, it was the fees they put on top of it.
$12 ticket turned into 20 something after convenience fees and everything. I'd imagine they are next on the chopping block after govt/lawsuits against ticketmaster/live nation and the likes

Brought my kids to see Super Mario Galaxy and it was $70 for tickets alone and another $30 for popcorn and two drinks

less and less now. It's just not worth it. NIL and pay for play and transfer portal have taken out the heart and fun out of college sports plus the ridiculous cost.. Glad I grew up in the 90's and college in the early 2000's to enjoy 30 years of real college sports.
Comparing LSU sports which you grew up on a child and have actual investment in to shitty woke movies today is not the same

What are you talking about?
For one, no, I don’t spend money on sporting events. I stopped going to Auburn games when it was $300 to see Auburn lose to New Mexico St.
Also, it’s not a 3 hour movie. It’s an hour and a half. Movies are high production, but in the past—recent past—movies with similar production costs didn’t require everyone paying $16/ticket.
Did you really just compare a movie to a professional or collegiate sporting event?

From what I can tell, the goal is to make the movie theater a Netflix model. As someone in the thread said: you can avoid those fees and the ticket prices if you’ll just commit to $20/month.
Nickel and dime on everything.

the last time I went out to a theater to watch a movie was Black Hawk Down, so I don't even know what ticket prices are like these days
nor care

I don’t mind the prices but the customer service at the Theatre is disgraceful. Bunch of kids on their phones not working. Took my youngest and his buddy for Project Hail Mary, they thought I was nuts for berating a kid who wasn’t working. Ticket monitor was down and the little frick just sat there playing on his phone while we were incapable of purchasing tickets. Don’t mind paying for upgrades to seating, screens etc but your employees need to do their jobs if the prices are this high.

I paid $6 to see Project Hail Mary a few weeks ago. Pretty good value for a 3 hour movie.
