An unanimous U.S. Supreme Court on Friday undermined a huge jury verdict from Plaquemines Parish and potentially other lawsuits by local, parish and state governments seeking recompense from the oil companies they say tore up Louisiana’s coastal marshes in the search for fossil fuels.

The 8-0 decision, written by Justice Clarence Thomas, in Chevron USA Inc. v. Plaquemines Parish, is a narrow ruling on a technical legal issue. It says an appeals court erred when it denied Chevron’s request to move its case into federal courts, rather than decide the case in state district courts.

The marshes are gonna do what it wants. Mississippi river doesn't deposit sediment like it used to since man has been trying to control it. Can't blame the oil companies. Legislation won't help either

Seems like the correct result. I’m a little surprised the Fifth Circuit didn’t rule this way when they got it.

I was talking with the head of LOGA about a month ago. He said all of the barge drilling rigs have been sold because no one wants to be sued for following the law. There is still one working north of Mobile in the Swamp because Alabama ain't full of ambulance chasers like Louisiana is

Agreed. Especially since it was 8-0 in SCOTUS

Corp of engineers blocked the Mississippi entrance into Bayou LaFourche in 1905 at Donaldsonville. The bayou used to carry 17 % of the river down through the marsh. You can still see signs of dead oak trees from salt water near grand isle. A sugar mill at raceland experienced salt water intrusion in 1910 because the fresh water flow ended.

17% seem like a lot but regardless they need to open that up. I am against big government but in this case it is time for to start moving people out from certain areas on the coast and doing major reclamation and levee removal.

The only thing on the coast in a lot of areas should be industry and recreation, no permanent residents.

problem with reclaiming Bayou LaFourche is over the last 120 years, low flow through it has allowed silting up and its now a ditch instead of a bayou
