https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/14/china-us-strait-of-hormuz-war-donald-trump-oil-energy-crisis-conflict-middle-east-iran.html

quote:

China has called the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz a “dangerous and irresponsible act” that will further enflame tensions in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that the targeted blockade of the vital shipping channel, which began at 10:00 a.m. ET on Monday, coupled with an increase in U.S. military deployment, risks undermining an “already fragile ceasefire situation.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a press conference that only a full ceasefire can help ease the situation, adding that Beijing would make efforts to help restore peace and stability in the Middle East.

China — which has long backed the regime in Tehran — has a key interest in the Strait being reopened, with Beijing being the largest buyer of Iranian crude. The blockade directly cuts off that supply and potentially has a far-reaching impact on the Chinese economy.

The U.S. began preventing ships from entering and exiting Iranian ports in the vital waterway on Monday in a bid to force Iran to reopen the Strait, after peace talks in Islamabad faltered over the weekend.

The measure marks a sharp escalation in the conflict despite a pause in hostilities agreed April 7.

The spokesman also dismissed reports of China supplying weapons to Islamic Republic as “completely made up.”

“China believes that only by achieving a comprehensive ceasefire and ending the war can we fundamentally create conditions for easing the situation in the strait,” he said in a statement.

“China urges all parties to abide by the ceasefire arrangements, focus on the general direction of dialogue and peace talks, take practical actions to promote the easing of the regional situation, and restore normal traffic in the strait as soon as possible.”

Oil prices retreated below $100 a barrel on Tuesday amid reports of diplomatic resolution to the six-week conflict. Brent crude, the international benchmark, was about 1% lower in early trade at $98.44, while prices of U.S. West Texas Intermediate for May delivery was 2.6% lower, at $96.48 per barrel.

Interesting, I was just talking about this very thing last week and certain posters said China would continue to get all the oil they wanted from Iran.

Well, if China doesn't like it then Trump's definitely doing something right.

This week I have really convinced myself that Trump is making some kind of play to force China to make some kind of move to pressure the Iranians. But I just can't figure out what it would be.

According to the shipping tracker I was following last night, two tankers flying Chinese flags were allowed to.pass through the blockade and are now steaming towards China.

Two more were headed toward the US/Venezuela.

I'm not sure what Chy-nah is bitching about.

Trump wants them to cease and desist sending arms, especially anti-aircraft shoulder fired missiles, to Iran.

I suspect that a lot of this embargo has to do with cutting off weapons shipments, from Russia and China, to Iran.

I've been hearing that they've thwarted some shipments from coming across Iran's land borders as well but, of course, the MSM is not reporting that.

The water borne embargo is not just about crippling the Iranian economy ... it's militarily strategic and our air and land presence, through the skies and ME allies, is just as important.

China has been sending weapons in via Afghanistan and Iraq ... but we've almost gotten that completely shut down in the past few days.

As I understand it those ships were not carrying Iranian oil which is supposedly what were are blocking or trying to block from exiting the straight.

The enforcement on irianian oil sanctions have gone largely unenforced for years.

If you expect sanctions to work, you should expect to enforce said sanctions…..

China has been buying Iranian oil (Venezuelan, as well) at basement prices, processing it into finished products and selling them to the world. China should have been made to play by the same rules for decades. I know it’s overused, but this whole Iran deal is, in fact, 3D chess.

China is like Iran's step dad. Really not his place to do the discipline but at some point, his belt will need to come out.

Chinese ships will go unmolested and we'll continue to underwrite the shipments all the way to China. They just got Iranian oil at a discount and got American security on it.

Why are we playing this game again? Must be TACO Tuesday - Chinese style.
