I go on Friday afternoon and make a walk around and visit with a few friends. Spent a total of 2 hours there. Was back home for 3 and locked in here for the weekend. Not going anywhere near that mess. I have been going since the 70’s when it started. It is a great festival but it has gotten too damn big. The bad part is that the festival was started to bring in money for the non profits and it is great at that. They have control of north sixth street from hickory st to the festival grounds. Most of the other vendors selling food in town are out of towners who have rented spaces from the city. I and many others think they need to dial that part back a bit, but that will never happen.

A lot has been talked the shootings the last 2 years. The hood rats come out at night so they scaled back the hours to a 8pm close on Friday and Saturday night. We will see if that helps. The never really had much issues in the daylight hours. I will add that they most definitely increased police presence this year. Most notably yesterday was La state police was out in high numbers.

I thought that they had taken a bunch of preventative measures to try to keep it from happening this year.

From Facebook:

Public Safety Alert.... Breaking : There have been credible Threat's to commit acts of violence at the Ponchatoula Strawberry festival this weekend. Law Enforcement is "investigating". A number of people have been "banned" from attending, but we all know how that goes. Keep your heads on a swivel if you plan on attending.

I'll go with one shooting. We probably won't hear about domestic disputes. It used to be a good time 20 years ago. They need to start charging to keep the riff raff away.

If you have been banned from attending a strawberry festival you need to reevaluate your life choices.

Unless the ban was due to a dispute over the merits of Earliglow and Ozark Beauty, then it can just be chalked up to good, old fashioned, impassioned debate.

I think a local yute was banned for making a TikTok with gang gestures, gunplay, and Skrawberry Festival threats. That’s what I saw on Facebook last week, anyway.

ETA: actually, four were banned. Details in AN17 story

Three juveniles and one adult.

quote:

Layrisson said police are “familiar” with all four of the individuals. He said the only suspect of adult age is currently on trial for felony charges and will soon face a second felony trial.

Additionally the suspect is facing an aggravated flight from law enforcement charge regarding a recent incident when he fled from police, resulting in a high speed chase.

Layrisson said the suspect is not incarcerated but does have a curfew and was given a certain number of days to turn himself into PPD. Additionally, the suspect can only attend church, school and go to work.

Makes perfect sense.

It really was a great festival back in the day. Went for the first time in a long time two years ago and was like oh shite I don't really belong here.

Turf wars aren't uncommon in the strawberry bidness. Good, fertile strawberry patches are highly sought after real estate.
