Burns(LSU)stays high on leader board through Masters’ opening round

The surprise star of the day came from Sam Burns at the Masters.
Burns’ hot streak came at the same time Patrick Reed’s started to break off.
Burns birdied holes 8, 12 and 13. He grabbed one more on the last par five of the day to move him into the top spot.
Just two missed greens for the fifth-year player. The course is fitting him like a jacket.

Burns said the greens at Augusta National remind him of what he plays on at home. “I would like to think in my head that a lot of golf courses do, but at the end of the day, it comes down to execution. It doesn’t matter if it’s, you know, people would say, oh, the Valspar, it’s a perfect golf course for you. It’s like, well, yeah, if you execute, sure, it is. If you don’t, you can shoot 75 pretty easily. So I think that’s what it comes down to really to any golf course,” Burns said. “But I think, if anything, these greens are similar to what I play on at home. A lot of slope and fast. So I would say that part of it I’m fairly used to.”

I am not sure what announcer said it but he was going over the leader board and talking about Sam and said Geaux Tigers.

The guys I'd like to see win...
Rose & Burns (either I would really happy)
Spieth
Scheffler
Fleetwood

When Sam is on and putting well he’s as good as any player in the world.
Hopefully he can keep this up all weekend.

One of the other guys was going over the leaderboard and they were commenting on how Rahm and DeChambeau had rough rounds and the topic of who else should be watched as being in the running to win it and the guy said:
“Well, you can never count out Scheffler and Rory is obviously playing well at the top there, but keep an eye on Patrick Reed…”
Like, MFer, Burns is sitting at the top of the damn leaderboard, too! shite. He’s won on the tour multiple times.
Zero respect for the man.
Pretty sure Burns told someone at the PGA to jam it up their arse at some point because he gets basically no coverage unless it’s Sunday and he’s paired with fricking Scottie or Rory. Insane.

Sam has to earn it. He has petered out down the stretch before.

we need some characters in golf. Sam needs to get a little more personable and have more of a personality.

Never thought Major Burns would make it to the pros like this

I remember everyone saying that about Scheffler, too.
Then, once he started showing more emotion, he was “too emotional”.
Burns doesn’t need to change a thing.

Until he get's over the Major hump that's the way it's going to be.

his best results being a T7 at the 2025 U.S. Open and a T19 at the 2025 PGA Championship. He has often struggled with consistency in majors, missing cuts at the Masters in 2022 and 2024

I meant if he want's more coverage on TV, he needs to show more of a personality and be more personable. If he doesn't then continue on and don't change. I think getting over the hump of a major will bring somebody out of their shell a bit.
Scheffler showing too much emotion? Who says that? I always though of him as even keel. If anybody complains, why didn't they complain about Tiger fist pumping, Rory, or Bryson.
Spieth was funny talking to the ball when they covered him a lot.

He is giving it back so far today. That tee shot on 13 is gonna cost him at a minimum another stroke unless he gets a good lie on his drop an a playable shot
