My old luggage has gotten ratty. Need some new stuff…what brands do you recommend? Probably leaning towards hard case versus soft case. Thank you in advance…

TravelPro. Buy it for life product.

Not luggage exactly, but I travel with Filson duffel bags and backpack as a compliment to my suitcase.
Here’s the Journeyman after several years use with one of my Randalls peeking out of it:

Another vote for TravelPro
ETA: Hard sided luggage is a bitch. All I've ever had is soft sided and have never had a ripped bag or busted zipper. It is a pain lugging around a hard sided bag, or even trying to squeeze it into an overhead bin.

Briggs & Riley makes good/durable luggage. I do a fair amount of international travel and they hold up well.

Depends on your kind of travel interests and budget.
My "go to bag" for international travel has been my TravelPro Maxlite 5. They do have hard sided options, but I prefer soft sided for the flexibility.
Away gets high marks.
This blogger does a great job on travel tips. Here's one on luggage.
Easy on the eyes too!

I’m a big fan of my filson duffel and briefcase. My only complaint is when using the shoulder strap the duffel has a tendency to spin.
Pilots and stewardesses seem to exclusively use TravelPro if that’s not enough of a recommendation. The hard sided Riwoma look cool but they don’t seem to take abuse well considering what they are branded as.
I pack very light for normal trips. I have an Osprey Farpoint 40 and a Tumi Alpha; hate them both. Huge bags that don’t hold shite. My go to for non-business trips is a 26L Patagonia Arbor. It’s a flap top with minimal storage besides of the main compartment. I can easily do a weeklong trip using a few right sized packing cubes.

eBags. I’ve had suitcases from them I’ve sent on 700 flights and I still have them. I had to replace a wheel assembly on one of my 27” bags, which they shipped me, and I replaced in four minutes. And they don’t cost $400.

I’ll second going back to soft sided after having a hard shell check in suitcase completely fall apart on my last trip. The entire body cracked and split from top to bottom. Carry on is probably fine for hard sided.

Walmart and Target have some decent stuff.
Don't spend a lot of money on luggage, especially if you check it often.

Bric’s. An Italian brand, which offers European sized overhead carry-on cases. Good quality, and I like the way the inside of the cases are set up.

Soft but I’m a huge fan of the 100L rolling Patagonia. Have 3 and they’re indestructible.
