The man killed in a St. Claude shooting Tuesday afternoon was a father, crawfish maestro, bartender, spouse and a loved one to many, according to friends close to him.

Michael Garcia, a 41-year-old former Marine, died in a hospital after being shot in the head in his vehicle near the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Desire Street at around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Garcia was caught in the crossfire after Terrence Leavell, 48, allegedly opened fire on a group to protect his nephew, court records show. Leavell was detained on the scene and booked on manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a felon and illegal use of weapons.

I ride past there all the time… you have a convenience store on one corner and a former Popeyes that was painted pink by a losing US House candidate a few years ago

I've really cheated myself out of randomly getting shot in the head for no reason by moving out of that city. What was I thinking?

Manslaughter? As if it was an accident? No it’s still murder. That’s the problem. He will get 10-15 and do 6. Maybe.

In the 90s this Popeyes offered a plantation breakfast. Good stuff. I went to school right there at HC.

If the attempted shooting was in defense of his nephew or whatever it was, wouldn’t it stand that also killing the “innocent” man was also without malice and premeditation?

Innocent man in quotes because I’m thinking the first guy might have been too. Idk, that might be a dumb assumption.

If the determine the first one was a murder attempt, the charge should be upped. Idk if that’s how it works or not.

I know alot of you give Gov Landry shite, but he got the laws changed. If he gets 15 years, he’s doing 85% of that now.

A resident told police of seeing a neighbor firing a handgun in the area. Detectives identified that neighbor as Leavell and later found a gun inside his home, according to court records. Leavell is a convicted felon legally unable to possess a firearm, Orleans Parish prosecutors said Wednesday.

Going to need more common sense gun laws that criminals will actually follow…
