They are going to decline it, not because they don't want Bresee but because that is going to be far above his average (unless he blows up huge this year).
More likely he gets extended this year for around $7-8 mil per. If the extension happens late in the year or after the season it will likely be closer to $10+ mil per.

Like Bresee but hopefully he can take his game to another level.

Gemmy says the following about our Bryan:
Whether Brian Bresee is "good" depends on what you value in a defensive tackle: explosive pass rushing or stout run defense.
As of April 2026, he’s viewed as a high-potential starter who is still searching for consistency. Here is the breakdown of his performance over the last few seasons:
The Stats (2023–2025)
Season Games Starts Sacks Tackles Forced Fumbles
2023 17 0 4.5 24 0
2024 17 11 7.5 25 1
2025 15 15 2.5 37 1
The Scouting Report
Pass Rush Upside: This is his calling card. In 2024, his 7.5 sacks were tied for 4th among all NFL defensive tackles. Even in 2025, when his sack numbers dipped, he still generated 30 total pressures, ranking 37th at his position.
Run Defense Struggles: This is the main knock on his game. His 2025 PFF run-defense grade was a 46.2 (96th in the league). He can be moved off the line of scrimmage, which has contributed to the Saints' overall struggles against the run.
Durability: One of the biggest concerns coming out of Clemson was his health. He has largely silenced those critics, playing in 49 out of a possible 51 games over his first three seasons (only missing two games in late 2025 due to a knee injury).
The Verdict
Is he good? He is a solid, productive starter but hasn't yet reached "Pro Bowl" or "elite" status.
The "Yes" Case: He’s an athletic interior disruptor who can collapse the pocket. In a pass-heavy league, his ability to get to the QB makes him a massive asset.
The "No" Case: He is often a liability in the run game, and his sack production was inconsistent in 2025 compared to his breakout 2024 campaign.

And his play substantially changed afterwards. Your welcome. And I’ve given his props that he did start being a better run defender it appeared.

You keep young ascending talent on rookie contracts, simple as.

Guaranteed Salary: The fifth-year salary for 2027 is fully guaranteed, expected to be roughly $13.9 million
This is not rookie salary, which is why yes, Chadboy, I also thought they would forego picking it up and sign him to a cheaper per year instead.
But given some prices I heard floating around for DTs next year (or if any get extended this year), this price is actually not as bad as it initially looked. DTs are about to start getting paid well over this.
It does make me question whether we tried to extend him and it didn't work out so we picked up the option, or if they felt being flush with cap now it wasn't as big a deal to absorb this and have 2 more years to look at him.

Trade him to the giants for sexy dexy. Wonder how much additional pick compensation that would require?
Posted on 4/8/26 at 3:54 pm to Proximo
I didnt think they'd pick it up either.

We need someone lile Dexter to play next to him, which is why I think getting a real game changer at NT needs to be a priority in this draft.

You wanna see a true anchor nt next to him.. I wonder if christen Miller (Georgia) or Lee hunter (Texas tech) would be available in the 2nd? Lots of holes to fix, it's just how we want to address it this year

Agree.
if you aren't stopping the run then you are basically cooked as a defense.
nothing more demoralizing than a team lining up and whipping your arse and keeping the entire playbook open at the same time.

That's exactly my thought. There will be very quality NG's deep into this draft, we could get one with our second 4th or our 5th round pick. We resigned Ridgeway who made a huge difference when he was healthy, I would think that if they wanna address this they do it in the 4th or 5th
