...how long until some venture capitalist creates a city where smartphones and internet are banned? And, would you want to live there?

Seeing posts like this all the time now...

In 20-25 years, these current times will be the good ole days.

Zero chance I would be able to live in an electronic free zone. It would be healthier, but my work will never allow me that opportunity. I doubt I will ever retire, but if I do I may consider it. Still unlikely.

Naw, these people that opine about "the good old days" have access to much of what they yearn for but aren't willing to give up modern conveniences.

Old trucks are available everywhere
Flip phones... easy access
Old appliances can easily be found

It's really just another reason for grown men to bitch

Can your kids go out and play all day “until street lights come on” or dinner time, whichever is sooner?

I am in: to invest in VC, live there or both.

We are always in the good old days if you stay present. People in their 50s reminisce about their 40s, just as they remember their 20s and 30s. My dad was speaking on some memories a few months ago, he's in his mid 70s, and we realized it was just 15 years ago when he was early 60s. All you have to do is put your screen down and go enjoy yourself, or enjoy yourself listening to or watching whatever it is on your screen, who cares?

People in the 80s and 90s had to listen to old people remember when there were no TVs and electricity. .

There was a period there before cell phones got big (mid-late 90s) where the internet had just started gaining traction (but you were limited to needed a desktop or a heavy-arse laptop). I think we had reached a happy medium between tech and social life.

Yep, people have been pining for the good old days forever. The original Twilight Zone series had several episodes dedicated to that subject back in the early 60s.

You can miss things gone by but you can't go back, only forward

True .

I can remember being at an elementary school function in the late 1980s where my mom was bitching about all the fat kids, and how there werent any fat kids when she grew up in the 1960s b/c everybody was outside playing in the ‘good ol days’… And belive it or not, there WILL be people in the year 2050 reminiscing about how awesome 2026 was.. it’s the way of the world, but i hate that most people cant see it .

I always have to remind myself- it’s nice to glance back at the past , but always resist the urge to *live* in the past… it only causes depression.. thinking too much about the future leads to anxiety.. Gotta try to live in the present moment , it’s all we got .

I could live at the 1990's level quite well, internet exists but not in my dishwasher or refrigerator. I just replaced the battery in my old Palm Tungsten T.

This town should be surrounded by wooded areas and lore spread about monsters who live in the woods if you stray too far from the community.

I think the big negative regarding the internet today is it makes people feel guilty. You're sitting on the couch, 15lbs overweight, watching a video of a younger family "grabbing life by the horns" and having regrets. You'll go back to your Monday-Friday 8-5 job, and you didn't really accomplish much on the weekend. You overlook the fact you played catch with your son, listened to your daughter talk about her friends, cooked with your wife, hugged and kissed her, cleaned the kitchen, etc. It doesn't take as much as you think to "grab life by the horns." I can enjoy reading TD just like I can enjoy watching birds in my backyard, sky-diving, hiking, or looking at a picture hanging on the wall while I'm taking a shite. People need to forgive themselves more, quit being so damn hard on themselves.

ETA: I don't actually sky-dive fwiw

Well, first off no women would want to live there, so there's that. Based on your priorities in life that can be a positive or a negative.

The only way people are going to say today is the good ol days is if in the future they lay dying from radiation sickness cuz the Big Ones didn't instantly vaporize them, or they're the Hired Help for they're Chinese and Muslim overlords.

People here referring to the good ole days as in the 90s
I was expecting photos of 57 Chevy or a hotel with a neon sign out front

People do measure their lives to what they see on TV or Facebook. It spawns envy, jealousy which, I believe, leads to so much discord in our society.

We could do without a lot of what we have. AI for one. Folks would sure be healthier mentally unplugging.
