I'm not opening your blind link, but it's for goiters. You should have learned that in 6th grade science.

But with the amount of dairy and seafood Americans now eat, it's largely unnecessary.

I can't say I've ever wondered.

ETA: I just read the article. It could have used a deeper dive and instead read like a high school research paper, but it did have a couple of cool tidbits. I never knew goiters were so prevalent. Up to 30% is significant.

F that. Bring on the iodine

ETA: well, hell. Too much iodine causes them too

quote:

Goiter is an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck.
While iodine deficiency is a major global cause, both too little and too much iodine can increase goiter risk.
Genetic factors play a key role, with specific gene locations identified that increase susceptibility to goiter.

Fun iodine facts

1) iodine-131 is a radioactive isotope used to treat thyroid cancer

2) potassium iodide can be used to prevent your thyroid from absorbing radiation after a nuclear disaster.

To prevent goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland, often caused by iodine deficiency...

I grew up in the most rural parts of north Louisiana and remember seeing a couple of people with goiters. They were living very remotely.

Never saw them after high school.

They add fluoride to water and say that’s bad. How long ‘til they start criticizing this?
